Columny name

  • Just noticed that one of our tables has a column named "ExpireyDate".  We're a dev team split between the UK and the US so at least some of us are ostensibly native English speakers so we don't even have that excuse...

  • "Expiry" is a word. They spelled it wrong, but it's a word.

  • "Expire" is a word. They spelled it wrong, but it's a word.

  • Expiration is a word.  They spelled it wrong, but it's a word.

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

Exfoliation is a word. It isn't the one they used, but it's a word.

  • "Ex-pirate" is a word.  It's hyphenated and they spelled it wrong, but it's a word.

  • Snoofledumpjins isn't a word. They didn't use it, either.

  • "RatedEyePix" is an anagram for "ExpireyDate". That's irrelevant to the discussion, but an interesting mention.

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

This is a variation on a theme. It isn't the same theme everyone else used, but it is a theme.

  • This is a kitten in a wastebasket.  It is completely irrelevant to this discussion, but it is a kitten and it is a wastebasket.

  •  Inspiration is a word.  It's the opposite of expiration, but it's a word.

The aforementioned kitten is very cute.  It is still not related to information technology in any way, but kittens are notably cuter when contained within a receptacle not much bigger than themselves.

Without my post, I am nothing. Without me, my post is nothing.

  • ExpireyDate is the date when you left Pirey.

Also, this posting doesn't follow the theme of the postings before, but it's a valid point on the topic.

  • This post dooms Zecc's kitten. Nobody might care, but it dooms Zecc's kitten.

  •  Least on-topic thread ever?

  •  This thread is more topical than others I've seen. It's not very topical, but it's still a topic.

FTFY. Doesn't make it more on-topic, but FTFY.

  •  This sometimes happens on older systems where not all software is version-controlled.  They may have some reports that are the join of two tables, one of which had an "expirydate" column.  Originally, the second table did not have such a column.  So there might be 30, 40 SQL statements out in the wild with that join and referencing expirydate without a tablename prefix.

Then, somebody decides to add expirydate to the second table.  All hell breaks loose as all these reports or scripts break due to the ambiguous column name.  Nobody has time to fix them, and maybe they can't even find a definitive source.  So, you end up with the column name deliberately misspelled.  And believe me, it can get worse.  If you next add an expiry date column to another table, you may find it easier to write it as expiriedate.  I've seen systems with four or five such intentional misspellings.

The cure for this failing is to add tablename prefixes to all columns in joined tables and good code review right from the start.  Oh, and of course have everying in version control.

This is an on-topic post. Not that anybody cares anymore, but it's still an on-topic post and would be relevant to the discussion if the discussion hadn't become off-topic.

I didn't notice until after I had submitted my post. I could have edited or deleted it, but I didn't feel like it.

  •  ExpireyDate is not a real word.  And it's misspelled.  Go figure.

The problem is that it's not funny. The same barely-amusing-in-the-first-place joke, when repeated 27 times, not only loses its humor but becomes deeply depressing.

It's only 20 times. That doesn't invalidate your point, but it's only 20 times.

Actually I have to admit it wasn't my script. It would have been awesome, but it wasn't my script.

I find this thread humorous. I find a lot of similarly simple threads humorous. But not like this one.

Yeah, sounds like another RDBMS problem solved by switching to MongoDB.

It was at roughly this point in the thread that I began ejecting cinnamon ice cream from my nose, resulting in a sound that can best be described as "snoofledumpjins". Sadly, there was no one else in ye olde ice cream shoppe at the time with whom I could share a joke completely unrelated to database naming conventions.

It's Schrödinger's kitten, therefore it's both alive AND dead. We can't be certain whether it has the same number of lives as it did before derula posted, but it's still a kitten.

Nah, I think blakey is just lacking humor. Not saying he can't be fun sometimes, but he's just lacking humor.

That caused one of the most concentrated feelings of hilarity I've experienced in a long time. It may have very nearly almost caused me to wet myself, but it caused one of the most concentrated feelings of hilarity I've experienced in a long time.

  •  'X is Y. It's not Z, but it is Y.' is now a meme. It's not a very widespread one (yet), but it's a meme.

I don't think it will ever be very widespread. Sure it's sort of like a meme, but I don't think it will ever be very widespread.

  • This thread has gotten rather silly. It's not as silly as the SpectateSwamp thread, but it is still rather silly.
