I don't know which is worse

Background: A few years back, some consulting company sold my then-employer some services to tell them how to get from their present-state to full-SOA-compliance.The end result was a boilerplate document with the specifics of our company filled into the blanks. They charged $250/hour for each of 3 consultants for 3 months for a document consisting of 250 pages of pictures-for-C-level-managers. For the math-challenged, that's about $400,000.
A few days ago, some Indian headhunter contacted me to tell me that he a) just found my resume, and b) to tell me about this incredible job that's just perfect for me - 1500 miles away. I pointed out that my profile hasn't been posted in a while, and that when it was posted, it was clearly marked no relocation. He then asks my rate for a job I just told him there was no way I'd even consider, let alone interview for, let alone accept. He persisted. I remembered the consultants and figured a good way to get rid of this idiot was to quote such a ridiculous rate that he might actually get the point, and so quoted $250/hour plus $1000/day airfare plus $100/day car rental and incidentals plus $1000/day for an inconcenience fee (airport security twice/day plus travel time). For the math-challenged, that's $4100/day plus overtime.
A few days later, the same headhunter calls me back: they want me. WTF?! It turns out that they figured that with such a high price tag, I must be good! They actually wanted to set up a phone screen.
I have two teenage daughters who just discovered that boys are not yucky and that they like them. I am not about to start living away from home.
So we have:
- the headhunter believing that anyone is going to pay that rate for what I do
- the hiring manager thinking that it's worth it
- the hiring manager thinking he can get that kind of cost approved
I don't know which is worse.

Also - I now have a new retirement plan: send out insane quotes to every company looking for a freelancer. If only one of them bites, I'm set.

Or the third option, they want to see who in the hell thinks they're worth over $4k a day. You could be walking into the lions den.
Or possibility four is that there is no way they're going to pay that rate and are hoping that once they have you locked in their interview room that you'll "haggle" on the price.
I'd still go because of the free flight though...
And lets just say they were fairly serious about the price; I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to convince the fam-damnly to move for a year or two because you would be making $750+ a year.

Seriously though, see if they'd be open to telecommuting... My dad did that for about two years a while back. He'd work from home for a week, then the following week, they'd fly him in few a couple of days, then they'd fly him back. So basically he was only at their office about 5-8 business days a month. Not too shabby if you can handle all the flying...

Telecommuting sounds like a boss option, if you can swing it. If you have to be on site, I think the more important question is: how much does your wife actually like her career? The kids don't have shit to say about it, and a massive disruption will either keep the "boys" problem at bay, or make it worse; better ship them off to the convent while there's still time.

Recruiters who don't read far enough down my online resume to get to the part where it says 'no phone calls' also don't get to finish their cold-call spiel before I hang up on them.

For $4000+ a day, I think your wife and kids would understand if you moved there alone for a year or two. Send back money for them to take care of themselves, save up the rest, come back fuckin' loaded.
