No new tech, please. We're skittish.

  • Doing QA of new batch of product from a dev company in India.

Software has a print feature that is central to the product line - i.e. the user writes something, takes a little test, and prints it out.

We tried printing it on every printer I could get my hands on.  All of the networked office laser printers, band new machines, QA testers took it home and had neighbors try it out.

Nothing worked - text was missing, only a single image was printed, line breaks would disappear and the text would run off the page, totally blank sheets would come out, you name it.

On a lark, I dusted off my 21 year old Oki (dot matrix printer), fed through some green bar paper, and hit "print".

After my ears stopped ringing from the screech of the printer, I tore off the sheet.

    It was perfect.

This new product only seems to be compatible with old dot matrix printers.

File bug with India.  Their response:

    "Cannot reproduce.  Ticket closed."

I now have my Oki at my desk all the time, right next to my Thuderbolt RAID.

Somehow I get the feeling that all this new tech out now isn't going to have quite the lifespan of stuff developed in the '80s and '90s.  I can hardly wait for the day that India sends in something that's going to require me to pull out my Commodore 64 and paired 5.25" floppy drives or rebuild an 8800 from discrete transisters.

  • And your company accepted this?  Or you sent it back to them again?

  • We didn't accept it.

Let's just say we are on Gold #5.

    *sigh*

(to the indian devs) you keep using that word, i do not think it means what you think it means.

Get a cow and a shotgun. Point the shotgun to the cow's head. Take a picture. Attach the picture to another support ticket for the same issue. Don't forget to end the support request with "or else...".

Thank gods! Eventually, they'll die out and a more adaptable species will take over.

  • Perhaps now would be the appropriate time to mention to your higher-ups that the money saved on offshoring, is not going to help the bottom line if your main product's main feature stops working due to offshore devs; thus causing your clients to use an alternative, working product and destroying your main revenue stream? If they do not take the hint, I would suggest jumping ship... FAST.

At the moment, unfortunately, the problem is the exact opposite of the support response.
