Twitter changeover

  •

Ohoho! It looks like not only can you NOT just leave what isn't broken alone, you can't do it without breaking it for anyone who used old Twitter until the end!

    (Opera Dragonfly debugger)

Seeing this on any machine on which an old account was retained, browser and OS independent. No expert in JS or web infrastructure, but that reads to me like the very bar that's meant to tell me they've dragged me to new Twitter (complete with excessively wide layout, broken word wrap and slow JS powered interface) is throwing a spanner in the works and jamming the entire site up!

    EXCELLENT!

The best bit is, this was a known bug with the new UI for MONTHS. Did they do anything? No. Did they delay the launch? Possibly, but not until it actually worked.

ED: I put your new images in.  They got div overflows.  I would have made them links to the original, larger versions but I'll just leave them as links below because ... well just because I love you.

  •  Ewww.  Twitter.

You mean you're no longer able to get Perez Hilton, Ochocinco, and Kim Kardashian updates?

    Oh noes the humanity!

People still pay for text messages?

Hell, my primary interaction with Twatter is in fact by text message (I only use it when I'm in podunk egypt and cell coverage is spotty, nevermind 3G)

I sure as hell don't. I reupped my Verizon contract, and they tried to upsell me unlimited texting for "only an extra $30 per month" than I'm currently paying (on a 3 line family plan). WTF? Between the three of us, we probably send less than 10 text messages per year. So, at 10 cents per text...WTF?!

  • @Weng said:

People still pay for text messages?

Yes. Can't really justify a contract given I chew through £10 of PAYG credit every 4-6 months.

Same here, except that it's probably half the amount.

I would have to, if I ever sent any.  I also own a "flip-phone".

    BTW- I enjoy twitter immensely.

  • TRWTF is BlackBoard. Piece of sh*t online distance learning software.

Note: I'm not dogging the OP for distance learning; I myself am a distance learner. I'm dogging on the software; it sucks sweaty goat balls. I'd love/hate to see the source code for that site, as I'm sure it's chocked full of front-page-worthy WTFs.

  • I get that problem a lot, although not very often- whenever I open Chrome's Developer Tools to debug it it loads fine though.

And there I was wondering if Weng lived somewhere where it was commonplace to send text messages via a free web-sms gateway using the free Internet access they can get almost everywhere without needing a contract. It's a bit less impressive if free text messages are like the free toiletries most hotels give away to their customers.

Well, Weng lives in the next state over from me, and while it is a WTF, it's not that different, telecom-wise.

OTOH, I've read your post several times and while, individually, I understand all of the words, I can't figure out what, exactly, you're trying to say. This web-sms thing...you mean using a phone, or something else? (NB: I don't have any sort of a data plan, and don't really have much use for any such thing for my phone...at least not at current prices...so this is probably just me being unfamiliar with stuff.)

In any case, I'm pretty sure Weng meant paying for messages individually, instead of getting an "unlimited" option in your contract. I'm sure paying for individual messages sounds as archaic to him as long distance rates in terms of per minute charges does to me.

  •  @nexekho said:

Have a look at giffgaff (runs on o2), there are no contracts, it is payg.

    £5 package - unlimited texts

£10 package - 250 mins unlimited texts  unlimited internet

PAYG rates 4p / text  and 8p/min. 20p for first 20mb of data, then 20p per meg after.

  • I'm presumably missing something but a one-off £5 sounds like it's economically unviable, so I assume it's over some set time period making it like a contract.

That's odd.  I didn't see the 'instead of' portion.  That having been said, I prefer the option of getting a block on all text messages.  It's very difficult to do, but if you talk to the right person the right way, it can be accomplished.  This has the advantage of saving oneself from the time-wasting morons who insist on texting as their primary means of communication, as well as being cheaper than an unlimited plan.  (FYI: back in 2008, the right person was working for AT&T.  I do not know if she is still there, or if she's moved to a different telecom.  I wish you all luck in finding her.)

In fact I was. Though paying $9.99 to throw around a few dozen sub-kilobyte messages a month is reprehensible in its own way, it's worth it not to have to bother with needing to micromanage it. Of course, that quickly turns into Severe Anal Rape on family plans (hey, phone companies, if you're going to let people bundle lines together "for a discount" it helps to actually give them a discount) but that's your fault for deciding you love someone more than you love your low phone bill.

Sorry about that. I was trying to avoid being too specific as there are at least two legal ways of obtaining free Internet access. You either use a 'phone network which offers it (Giffgaff offered it to all of their customers, although the connection reliability was always pretty poor) or you have convenient access to free Wi-fi when you're away from home.

I don't spend £5 a month on my mobile 'phone, so I'm used to the idea of paying for everything when I do use it.

    @Weng said:

I've never thought of it as micro-management. Either they send me a bill every so often, and I pay whatever it says (so long as it's not too much higher than I expected), or I buy credit whenever it runs low. I'm not going to charge any of it to anyone else, so I don't need to know more than that.

  • Yeah, giffgaff used to offer free internet - no longer free, although the reliability has increased to about 99% - wherever I have a phone signal, I have data, and their unlimited data is a godsend for me (used approx 1.7gb last month).

How much do you pay per message at the moment? and who's it with?

  • @Marine said:

    I use giffgaff, too.

Returning to somewhere a bit closer to the original topic, I notice that they do offer free texts to Twitter. I wonder how it would fit with the various companies' T&C to send a text message to twitter, instructing it to send a direct message to another account you control. Another computer reads and immediately connects to a free text message site in order to send the message to a number of your choice. When it has been sent, this computer sends a direct message back to you to tell you this.

    Probably not that well.
