This is an interview process?

    Quick summary:

Initial contact is 2 weeks ago. They're "very interested in speaking with me" and hand my resume off to another team and I'm told to expect a call during business hours.

An entire week goes by. Nothing.

Then, on Monday, I get an email best summarized as "Sorry, operational priorities! lol. When are you available to chat?" I reply "Wednesday at 3PM".

    Wednesday comes and goes.

Thursday comes and goes... Or does it? At 8:30PM, I get a phone call "HI! IT'S <EMAIL DUDE>. CAN I CONFERENCE IN <PM> TO DO YOUR INTERVIEW?" I reply "No, because I'm standing in a Taco Bell parking lot with my car keys in one hand and a bag of nasty burritos in another. Call me Friday at 1:30." Dude says some utterly useless shit and tries to apologize and says the PM has tried to call me 5 times over the past few weeks (which he absolutely has not, unless all 5 of them occured on the weekends when I was out of cell coverage).

I receive and email - "I'll have the PM call you at 2:00 tomorrow. I CC'd him on this message." Except the dude named in the CC field is totally not the same name as I've been told to expect a call from.

It is now Friday at 2:40. I am officially no longer interested in speaking to these shitcocks, nevermind working for them.

    Incidentally, I have two theories:
    1) I've been personally vetoed by this PM, who doesn't want to admit it to the other guy
    2) They're running scared from the government budget thing (they're a GSA contractor) and have cut off hiring, but don't want to admit it to me (The other gov contractors I've been talking to lately all told me they'd frozen new hiring for the time being, until they know where the government budget cuts are going to land)

  • Sounds like a startup to me.  Would avoid like the plague, unless you're into that edge-of-your-seat-maybe-gonna-get-paid-this-week kind of environment...

  • You really should avoid working for bald-faced liars.

Did you miss the part about "government contractors"? That's the industry standard.

  • Oh.  I stand corrected.

Okay, perhaps I started kvetching a little too soon. Just got a call from the PM dude and he was ECSTATIC to be able to talk to someone who both knows what the fuck he's talking about (His best answer thus far to "what's web.config for?" was apparently "a WoW configuration file") and didn't demand to telecommute.

Still not too hugely impressed (and really, they don't need programmers for this job, they need college interns - but those are harder to get security clearances for because The Man thinks its public facing websites contain information that would cause serious harm to national security), and will be focusing my primary attention elsewhere unless they offer me appropriate bucketloads of cash.

  • I recommend immediately beginning to kiss the ass of whoever the hell is over the guy that lied about calling you.  He is already an enemy, and you will need political clout since you're already starting out at war.

Meh, not that interested in the position. It sounds like it'll either be an install-and-configure-this-off-the-shelf-CMS gig or rip-the-guts-out-of-this-off-the-shelf-CMS-and-reimplement-it-because-it-doesn't-work-in-our-insanely-overscaled-project. Neither of which are really a direction I want to go with my career.

  • It's for the best - I can guarantee you that.

Aaaaaaaaaaand that's enough of that. They sent me a copy of their benefits brochure - employee contribution to health insurance for a single user is very nearly $1000/mo. I'm pretty sure I can get that cheaper on my own. God forbid I get married - bitch better bring her own insurance. And if I have kids? Lets just say they wouldn't be visiting any doctors. Ever.

Their other 'benefits' are similarly slanted towards excessive employee pay-in. If I were to go full-benefits, my take home pay would be insufficient to pay my phone bill and put gas in the car, nevermind actually live. Something shady is going on here and I want none of it.

What the hell kind of benefits does their insurance cover?  Workplace BJs, hookers, booze?

    I'd report them...
