Abyss Web Server?

  • Hi,

one of my clients called me because "server is slow[er than usual]". At the site I find that they not only reinstalled ubuntu on top of the original setup, but they had an open mail server (seems to be the norm lately) and also replaced lighttpd with 'abyssws', a web server I never heard of before that is made somewhere in Tunisia.

So, while I reimage the box and grease the RG58 whip I started to wonder... Is it 'evil'?, for any interpretation of evil.

  • The web server looks legit. But is it properly licensed, or did "nephew" install the free personal version?

Tunisia?  That can't be right.  I always heard it as "Abyss Irish Webserver".

I thought the same, but so do a lot of fake antivirus. Lucky me it's not my problem.

Properly licensed? Haaa, funny. The free version of course. I wish every day could start as good as this one.

Sadly no girl. But the site says boldly:

Aprelium is a privately held company founded in 2001.
Its headquarters are located in Tunis, Tunisia.

Not that it makes me feel better about it.

    Well then, problem solved.

  • The server is OK for what I know. Though I mostly know it as a small and easily to configure web server you can install on your PC if you e.g. want to play around with DynDNS in your free time. I haven't heard of it actually being used in corporate settings.

Sounds exactly like the kind of thing the nephew-who-knows-about-computers would install.
