I'm too far into the future for Adobe and Tanuki

  • Upgrading our Adobe Connect server version 7.5 to 8.1 (the latest version) and trying to start it:

    C:\Users\Administrator>net start connectpro
The Adobe Connect Service service is starting.
The Adobe Connect Service service could not be started.

The service did not report an error.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

    C:\Users\Administrator>net helpmsg 3534

The service did not report an error.

    C:\Users\Administrator>

Not getting any help there, I eventually looked in a log file it it was saying the license was incorrect. Searched Google for some of the strings and found this KB article: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/906/cpsid_90662.html. Bug that prevents users in timezone +10:00 or higher from starting the server. The text of the article is inconsistent: it says it only affects +10:00 through +11:59 and affects East coast Australia and NZ. However, NZ is +12:00 (will be +13:00 in summer) and central Australia is +10:30 in summer... The workaround is to set the entire server to Japan's timezone, which worked, surprisingly enough.

I found that this bug has been fixed in Tanuki wrapper 3.4.0 so Adobe still hasn't updated Connect. TRWTF is Adobe.

Now why did you post the entire thread yourself? Couldn't you've left some for us, too.

Couldn't you rather have done something more fun and productive, like killing yourself? Because that's what I'd do if required to work with Adobe products ("products" in the same sense that a cow "produces" feces).

Well the only other things I had to do were involving photoshop and flash builder (flex), so it was all adobe today.

I once had to write a text extractor using the Acrobat API.  15 seconds per page - after performance optimization.  It ended up being faster for me to cut and paste the text myself while chanting "Fuck Adobe!".

As someone else has already pointed out, you're using too many words...

  • Remember Adobe before the days of "Creative Suite?" Before they bought Macromedia, and (somehow) made Flash even worse? Before they thought it would be a good idea to draw UI elements of desktop applications using embedded Flash applets? Before they thought they could do window management better than the OS (spoiler alert: they can't) and ended up breaking every single new window manager feature of the last 5 years, and many older ones?

    Those were the days.

Edit: removed redundant text that was redundant and so was removed.

I'm not quite sure I remember those days. How long has that been? (Still being serious here)

I do however remember that way back then I was highly annoyed at having to use Adobe Reader 4 to read PDF files when Word opened many times faster. I wasn't aware that using PDFs instead of docs was a feature, but for a simple display/print app the bloat was excessive even back then.

Several. Is the exact number important?

I loathe the day that I have to move to CS5, after I had the pleasure of fighting with its document windows. Did you know they fucking removed right-click on a window title bar? How the fuck am I supposed to duplicate my document?

No, I just don't know if that was even before the shit I was complaining about, or if that already happened.

Image -> Duplicate? Or is that just a "they changed a feature I'm used to" bitch? Some keyboard shortcuts have changed CS3 through CS5, mostly for the better.

First Photoshop I used was CS2 and when I was upgraded to CS3 (then CS4 now CS5) I was also upgraded to Mac, so I miss out on some of the Windows Adobe WTFs.

We still do a lot of Flash here, even though we are supposed to support iDevices (no-one's complained yet so I guess it's not really a big deal). But then our target audience is corporates, too many stuck on IE6, at least Flash Player 10.2 is still supported there. (Note, these aren't general websites but custom "modules" for clients)

    Wow.

I actually looked through the menus to see if I could find the option, but I must have glossed over it somehow. Thanks! I am now placated and pacified.
