Netflix WTF

  • So Netflix changes their pricing plan, fine. So I change to a streaming only account, sure. So I have a couple DVDs out, yup. So I get this (paraphrased):

"Since you removed DVD shipping from your plan, you must return your two checked-out DVDs within 7 business days or you will be charged $20 each for them."

Fair enough, right? I haven't touched the DVDs anyway. So I dig under my desk, find them, shove them in the mail, and the next day I get the "Netflix has received (movie)" notice. All done.

Oh wait. Let one more day pass and I get a new email from Netflix: "For monday, (movie) shipped!" WTF. I have to MANUALLY clear my queue? Or I get charged $20 because Netflix keeps sending me DVDs I don't want? Were you going to tell me this at some point, Netflix, or just let it be an unpleasant surprise? Oh, and BTW, my queue is like 250+ movies long and there's no one-click way to clear it, so this is going to be a fun half-hour of hitting "delete, delete, delete, delete" until I get carpel tunnel.

For the record, I don't have anything against Netflix's rate change, and in fact I think they're still undercharging for steaming. (World of Warcraft is like $17 a month, and not nearly as entertaining.) But this is just stupid.

Clearly a WTF oversight on their part. More than likely they mistakenly forgot that a "switch to streaming-only" is effectively a cancellation of your DVD plan, and should be treated as such. I'm pretty sure if you had canceled your subscription all together they would have promptly canceled your queue.

I'd just call customer service and give them a piece of your mind and ask them to cancel your queue.

But I don't want to delete my queue! It's a very useful list of movies I want to see, and at some point in the future I may decide to turn on DVD delivery again. I mean, on well, the deed is done now, but how fucking irritating is that. (I saved a copy of the movie titles first, so I can re-enter them later if needed.)

  • All things considered, you had already paid for the rest of the month's DVD delivery service, no? Canceling the (future) subscription doesn't let them out of a prior contractual arrangement with you to provide the movies.

Not saying it isn't annoying or unintuitive, just saying that they kind of have to do it that way.

This was my first thought. The queue is really useful, because it's a record of the movies you've decided you'd like to watch at some point. I always forget that sort of stuff when it comes time to choose ("So, what did we want to watch, again?").

  • Isn't there some kind of "vacation" feature that keeps them from sending movies while you are away?   Sending movies to people who aren't home is a good way to have them stolen, so I expect they would.  I would set myself to vacation and forget it.

  •  @op: WoW is $17 a month? I was wondering where does blizzard get it's money from.
