  • We actually misnamed the war on terror. It ought to be the Struggle Against Ideolgical Extremeists Who Do Not Believe in Free Societies Who happen to Use Terror as a Weapon to Try to Shake the Conscience of the Free World.

This is really different from other stuff they feature there. This makes him seem clever and sarcastic.

  • Is it just me who remembers that it was originally The War Against Terror, for about two minutes until someone spotted the acronym?

I don't recall that. It's been a while, although at least in the US, the typical formulation is "The War On $X," so I doubt that it was like that here. At least with this "War on Something" we were actually dropping bombs and shooting guns, as opposed to wars on poverty, inflation, etc. I guess there is still some of that warlike violence in the war on drugs.

Officially, the US government (or at least the military and intelligence community) referred to it as the Global War On Terror...GWOT, pronounced "Gee Wot." At least until the W word offended someone in the current administration, and we have "Overseas Contingency Operations." Which actually complement the "Man Caused Disasters" pretty well, I suppose.
