I like this weak attempt to reassure scared grandmas:

It's getting harder and harder to pretend the TSA is anything but security theater.

That's not true. There was a period of time where they were using backscatter to virtually strip passengers1. So, for a time at least, some of the TSA agents were getting paid to go to a virtual strip joint.
1 Supposedly that software has been patched to protected modesty, but who knows.

From the video summary (emphasis mine):
We bought a government-surplus Rapiscan Secure 1000 full-body scanner on eBay and extensively tested it in our lab. We found that it's possible to conceal knives, guns, and explosives from detection by exploiting properties of the device's backscatter X-ray technology.

The same reason government does most of what they do: to give the appearance of addressing a problem. Actually solving a problem is a barrier to high budgets.
