Duplex ctrl in a phy and a mac

I have a hardware application in which a device is running in fiber 100FX mode. The phy (actually its a serdes that kind of implements a phy) says that it does not support half-duplex. But I am wondering whether it even needs to in a fiber port. What if I just configure the mac in half duplex. Doesn't it control how and when data is sent on the line. I am not sue what device would technically control this. Its sort of a hardware question, but thought I would post it since I am doing software for it. Mainly just curious if anyone would have any thoughts about it. I will also ask the hardware vendor about this eventually.
