BANGALORE: A 31-year-old techie killed his 2-year-old daughter and later committed suicide at his house on Tuesday night.

Santhosh Sarade, a resident of Garudadri Apartments at Kudlu under Parappana Agrahara police limits hanged his daughter from a windowpane before hanging himself using the same window curtains. Santhosh reportedly consumed alcohol on Tuesday night. He didn't leave a suicide note. Failure at work is suspected to have pushed him to suicide but why he killed his daughter is not known.

Santhosh's wife Sushma was asleep when the incident happened. She woke up around 3 am and found her husband and daughter missing from the bedroom. She stepped out and found them dead in the next room. The shocked Sushma cried for help and neighbours informed the police.

Sushma, 25, an employee of a private firm, is yet to get over the shock. She married Santhosh, a native of Bidar, about five years ago. After their wedding, the couple moved to a three-bedroom apartment in Kudlu.

    `Work pressure'

Santhosh's family said he resigned from an IT major on Monday. Santhosh's father, Vasanth Sarade, said: "Citing work pressure, my son quit one IT firm and joined another about six months ago. He worked even on Saturdays and Sundays. Despite this, he looked worried and complained about pressure at the work place. We have no idea why he quit,'' Vasanth said.

Another family member said Santosh was depressed because his career had become stagnant, and many junior to him had done better in terms of promotions. He said Sushma was helping him cope with pressure and depression.

This is result of too much stres in IT working envronmnet. Are you also subject to presure?

also is it true that us of a goverment will pay money if you are on bench?

ED: pre isn't the right thing to use here.  I put it in a quote for ya. -btk

  • Sad story... probably common but sad indeed.

Do you think of unemployment insurance ? private or public ?

I won't talk for other countries, but in France any working person has a part of his/her wages collected for the unemplyment insurance which gives money (a fraction of the salary, around 80% most of the time) to unemployed people if they can prove* they're searching a job.

(added note : on the other hand, there's also a lot of pressure here on the employees...)

    * prove it how ? that's another (pretty controversial) point...

In India, unemployed people are shuned by society.

Goverment has unemployment benefit alowed only if you are below poverty line. It is dificult to prove this. Also there is not any fixed percent of money given to unemployed people. There is fixed sum insted.

In my country as well, you get unemployment benefits for a while if your job dissapears due to market necessities and there is no job for you.  If an opening appears in that company and you are qualified for it you might get preference, if the alloted time for the unemployments benefits is up you might claim benefits for Social Security and the like but besides being very low is really hard to qualify unless you can prove disabilities or special circuntances.

  • Not all IT jobs are the same of course, but at least in the webdev biz there is plenty of pressure. Not uncommon to work late or some weekend hours close to big deadlines. But hey, a bit of pressure is fine, keeps you thinking the work is important.

  • ♿ (Parody)

In the US, unemployment insurance is dealt with mainly at the state level, although occasionally, the feds will shovel money at the states* to prolong the time during which individuals can collect. Generally, if you weren't fired for cause (e.g., layoffs due to generally poor results or whatever), you can collect, though you're supposed to be actively looking for work.

I think any job has the potential for a lot of stress. My impression of similar stories in the US is that there is usually some underlying mental illness in addition to whatever was going on with the person.

    * There have been studies that show that increasing the duration of unemployment "benefits" keeps unemployment higher, since people are not as motivated to look for a job. See "funemployment."

  • Stress start after geting up from bed to time you go back to bed. Some level of stress is healthy, but a lot of it plus persons not going to cope with it, you go mad after some time.

Normal persons seek outlet for stress. outlet is found in smoking, drinking, sport, lesure activities and watching movies. if outlet is negative like drugs or beating spouse, then person is not fit for society

In fact, France and US aren't so different about these facts.

Probably in a similar fashion we do it here in Australia.

Centrelink (what we call Social Security, they changed it's name for some reason, I don't know why) said that because I wasn't a student anymore, I was a job seeker... even though I already had two jobs.

Every two weeks, I would have to report my income, and if it was below a certain amount, I would have to show them that I was searching for jobs. They even set me up with a job search agency to help me find a job: one fortnight they gave me a list of things I needed to do (work for fifty something hours, update my resume and send it to them, and find out about IT qualifications). A pain in the neck, but I ended up earning too much for too long to be worthy of their attention.

Judging by some of the conversations I overheard when I was waiting for the people to feed stuff to a computer or to go and get printing, figuring out how hard someone was looking for work was based a lot on figuring out if the person was telling the truth or not, or if they actually went in and applied for the jobs there and then.

In any case, I'm glad I'm no longer considered poor and worthy of unemployment benefits because the hoops I had to jump through for the government were ridiculous.

  • If you can't handle the stress, get another job, really.

One of the problems of IT in some countries is that anyone is allowed to work in this field, as long as they want to. This is true specially where there's high demand for it. The result being that you get a lot of techies who are not prepared to perform their jobs well. And when I say this, I'm not talking just about skill and technique. Working with computers takes more than that.

You need a certain mindset that'll keep you from going mad. Also, a lot of psychopaths get jobs in IT because HR usually thinks that IT people are just weird and antisocial. As many people see it, some level of sociopathy is expected and even tolerated when it comes to techies. The result being that socially ill people use their jobs as justification for their behavior, and then when the shit hits the fan, people will blame workaholism and pressure at work.
