Sad truth for personal relationships in Project managemnt world

  • Project manager job always perilous.

My experieence of project manager is not present, but I see these people in company canteen sometime staying after hours and one of them talk for divorce.

I think it is sad state where pm is not have any time to spend with family.

How much time is you people spend with family?

  •  I have no family.

I divorced my family to have more time managing projects.

No, seriously, my dad was a major work-aholic, so basically I grew up in a single-parent home that had two parents residing in it. I'm still bitter and the hundreds of broken "we'll go skiing or boating or do something fun" promises he broke while I was growing up, but I've kind of developed a less-angered calm about it now than I had in the past. He spent new years 1999 in his office "just in case" something went wrong. (Nothing went wrong. Natch.) But as a result, as you can imagine, I do my best to not work more than 40 hours a week, take all my vacation time, and generally not freak-out about deadlines. Not that I have kids now, but, man, when I do-- I'm sure as hell not going to be my dad.

  • I'm sure as hell not going to be my dad.

Nah, that'd just be damned weird. Some kind of odd paradox going down there.

  • ♿ (Parody)

I couldn't be a PM just due to the sort of junk they have to do with respect to contracts, etc (at least at my company). I've had to sit through a couple of meetings where some of that was discussed, and I wanted to poke my eyes out with my pen.

That said, I don't think there's anything particularly specific to that job that leads to work-aholicism or divorce.

    That doesn't surprise me

    btw me neither

I would also like to work 40 hour in week. Sometime owing to client pressure and deadlines we are working for more than 12 hours in single day. Sometime more than 16. Luckily company is providing place to sleep and also take shower while in office building itself. My company also providing free breakfast & free dinner if I spend night in office building doing work for client.

Ok, first he is not american,

Both choices are open to americans, but they call it mail order bride instead of arranged marriage.

Not necessarily. But even if so, why do something that that I hate when I could do something that I love, and that makes for a nice living?

It's not common, but I know a guy who once did this. It largely grows out of US immigration law, I think, plus the sucky lives of women in places like Russia. One way to get into the country legally is to be married to a citizen.

I think Dave Lister managed that one in Red Dwarf series 7. Although they didn't much dwell on how completely WTF that is. Also, that was the horrible fate that almost befell Michael J Fox in the first Back to the Future movie.

  • I think Dave Lister managed that one in Red Dwarf series 7

I think the episode was called Oroboros, opened with Dave being found as a baby under a pool table in a box marked Oroboros.

  • I don't think "work addiction" is limited to project managers; I've known some engineers who seem to spend far more time at work than at home.

Pretty sad in my mind, as I know I'm going to try to ensure that I spend at least as much time with my wife as with my colleagues (I'm getting married this fall).  I've laid the groundwork for this already though: I think I've only worked more than 10 hours perhaps 20 days in the past 10 years.

How do you know about mail order brides?  Isn't there a trade embargo against that?

BTW- You can probably do that over the internet now.  Maybe Amazon.com - if that's what you're into.

Against mail order brides? Sure, but it happens anyways.  There are even companies dedicated to that
