User Police

  • One of the hardest things to find in Brazil is a programmer who also understands English. Since most documentation for about every technology is in English, this leads to a monumental amount of WTF's.

When I got my current job, they told me that understanding "some English" was a plus. I soon found out why... In my daily grinding and bug-hunting, I'm finding pieces of Engrish in a weekly basis.

So last week I had to do some bug slaying in a customer's system. They gave me some credentials, but the user configuration didn't allow me to do eveything I needed. While poking aorund my profile, I found out that they had put me in a user group called "User Police"

I spent some time wondering about what a user policeman does. Maybe it involves eating donuts in the company cantina, and every once in a while arresting someone and beating them with a clue-by-four because their actions led to an "illegal operation".

Later I found out that the one who created the group actually meant "user policy". Seeing as the characters are too far apart for a typo, and how both words sound the same if you try to pronnounce them as if they were written in Portuguese... I'm once again wishing I could do question people about their fluency, Jules Winnfield style.

Convince your government or minister of education or whom ever that teaching kids english in school as a second language is a good move. Perhaps even going for that extra mile and let them add a third language, like spanish, german or perhaps, considering the location of india, mandarin.

What you yourself can do is of course learn the language on your own, and when we assume you are not a novelty account you are actually pretty much on the right path by joining an english forum and using it daily. Perhaps won't help your pronounciation, but people who don't understand your naitive written language will thank you for your better grasp of english when for some reason then need to read your code or documentation.

On a side note. Wasn't india occupied/part-of the great british empire for a hundred odd years. I'd always imagined that grasp of the english language would be pretty common in india.

Alternatively, encourage home-grown tech industry growth so that you're the one creating the documentation and everybody else has to deal with your language.

About twice that, if you include the period when the East India Company was in effective control.

    It is.

You post appears to display unstated assumptions and a lack of real knowledge about both the history of India and the current state of language usage and teaching there.

  •  Being fluent in a foreign language is hard. In my country (the Netherlands), knowledge of English is relatively good, it gets taught at school from the age of 10-11, we hear a lot of it on TV and the languages English and Dutch are closely related. Still I think that about 95% of the population could make a mistake like this.

    Indeed.

     So we have :

    [english >>> french]

    "font" >>> "police"

    "policy" >>> "police"

"fuck a monkey in front of Groucho Marx" >>> "police" "niquer un singe devant Groucho Marx"

     and so on...

  • I like this forum because it visualizes that globalization can work. There's people from totally different regions and cultures coming together, making fun of each other, making fun of themselves, and discussing IT WTFs, while at the same time respecting each other and not being racist or nationalistic at all. If the whole world were like this forum, we would truly be the species of God.

Also, any discussion would derail after a few sentences into unrelated flamewars about things nobody really cares about.

French people tried also. And in the same time they tried to achieve "the 5th generation language" in opening the way to "natural language programming".

To me, it's a terrible fail (I tried the web part during a former mission, working with Webdev, version 9. Hated that nearly-all-WYSIWYG garbage).

In the few places where the "developer" could actually write code rather than just fiddling with an army of wizard/dialogs... you could write in the source code :

    @windev source code example said:

    Orange est une chaîne.

    Strawberry is a string.

Pomme et Poire sont des nombres.

... which would legally compile as the declaration of two strings and two numbers.

I'm so happy today to work on other technologies (mostly XML, mass printing, and web)

I don't think we can. The two sentences weren't mutually exclusive.

For example, I could say "'Going out for Timbits?'  Is that how people are calling it nowadays. Canadians sure are liberals."

The genrally accepted implication is "You Canadians", but it could just as well mean "Us Canadians".

    1. Speak English (or something remotely close to it) as a primary language

      2) Has a lot of IT workers, and IT companies

      3) Has a crazy hilarious corrupt government, and as such was slammed during the financial crisis (highest level of household debt in the world, according to the Wikis, right behind Iceland I imagine)

Based on the stuff you've been saying in this thread, though, I might guess you're from a former Russian republic... but the problem with that is your English is too good to be ESL (I think?) and the odds of someone from an English-speaking country moving there permanently would be remote. But it would explain the paranoia over revealing where you're from.
