UStream lies

  • Garbage Person

So just for shits and giggles, I've taken to streaming some of my unpaid dev work (either on my own projects or for a volunteer cause or two). I noticed something, however:

When you first start a stream, ustream spams your silly-assed 'wall' thing with a bunch of fake crap, presumably to make you feel popular or some shit.

Cuntmunity server is being broken, so here's a link to the image I was trying to post

  •  link is a 404

  • Garbage Person

... WTF. I'll have to yell at the admin, it looks like it's blackholing any requests with a referrer outside of the 'approved saintly sites' list - the koreans were probably using it to host porn again, instead of just warez screenshots.

    Here's a more direct link:

My ignorance is giving me an itch. This site is about IT professionals, so 'dev work' is presumably about developing software systems. And yet "streaming" is about transmitting music and video over the Internet.People connect to streaming systems so they can listen like radio or watch like television. When you are "streaming ... dev work", what is coming through the stream?

A video feed of whatever the hell is on my screen, and an audio feed of hilariously bad techno.

And yes, it's exactly as popular as it sounds. As for why I'm doing it, it's so I can get a feel for the platform and use it more effectively for more interesting things.

  • Doesn't UStream only stream webcams? I thought you needed Livestream Procaster to stream your desktop.

There's a URL on the image. From a cam-related software. That has to mean something, but... What can it be?

Officially, yeah. Unofficially, there's a variety of software that reads your framebuffer and pukes it back out to a webcam driver.

  • All those comments, but only two views. I guess most of them un-viewed the page after posting.

  •  I love how you have blacked out your name in your screen grab but if you search for "hackfest" on ustream, its on the first page :D

And this leads me to http://www.tfnn.net/forum/index.php?topic=11067.0

Btw Weng, I totally pictured you as a cooler guy, at least use some dark tinted glasses and a black leather jacket, I mean by pictures of you I would think you race go-karts or something like that....

Well, ok, then let me ask it a slightly different way: why would you use a product designed for streaming webcams, then hack it with some loop-back driver thing which puts a gigantic watermark all over your image, when you could just use a product designed to stream your desktop in the first place?

TRWTF is there's an easy-to-find checkbox to turn off that logo, right near where you choose to stream your desktop instead of a camera, yet this [guy|girl] left it on.

Oh hey, check that out. Can you tell I only looked at the configuration screen for the software for under 10 seconds?

Isolation of identities is only a minimal, background priority for the EyeMWing|Weng barrier. EyeMWing is relatively tainted - as bizarre as it sounds, there's at least one other guy using the name and I used to use it to troll HEAVILY back before I just decided to be an asshole. Weng is specific to tdwtf - because when I first created the account, I was unsure just how much cross-contamination with IRL work there was going to be (the answer: Practically none). This is clearly evidenced by the fact that my other username is in the fucking link to the original image. The only reason I bothered with the blackout is habit - cross-contamination between a few of my other identities is much more strictly prohibited.

If you're really bored, you can actually backtrack Weng all the way to the real world without even using Google - just information in this post. If that's too tough, combining it with information I've posted in the recent past will do the job.

The technical footprint and capabilities are really what I was looking for. I don't give a flying fuck about the social part, so I don't need actual viewers.

Necessary software, consumed resources and bandwidth, obtrusiveness, that sort of shit.

Yeah, the problem couldn't possibly be that you mangled the link by adding a space (%20) to the end of it, and that it works fine once it is stripped.

You say that as if I did it - rather than cuntmunity server.
