Getting in trouble with admin team!

  • I am in trouble with admin team, because "I install firefox 4 without approval". I only got approval for 3.6 version, so installing of 4 is "no-no". They filed one formal complaint and now I am in little trouble because of this.

My manager came and told me that "don't install unapproved software without admin blessings".

Have you ever got in trouble with your admin team?

For people working in small companys, admin team is team responsible for all network, printers and other hardware.

  • The trick is to get the admin team to let you do what you want. One of life's little rules: always be on good terms with the security guys, cooks, cleaners, and sysadmins. You can't win a fight with them.

Your best bet is to make friends with the admin guys - either they're just playing power-games, or there is a good reason they didn't want you installing FF4. Either way, the only way to solve the problem is with a bit of goodwill on their part. I'd suggest taking them a six-pack of beer on Friday afternoon (or cultural equivalent) and apologising.

No, your best bet is to be the admin guy (like me), preferably with no archenemy Headquarters Admin Team above you (unlike me).

Shhh. If I say I'm a sysadmin as well, people might realise I was just trolling for beers.

No, your best bet is to install only the version of Firefox they approved and then go out and expose the machine to every virus vector you can.  Use the list of security upgrades in version 4 to identify the ones that will infect it out of all usefulness.

Then when your boss asks why you're reading magazines instead of working, you tell him the computer is hopelessly wedged by the unreasonable restrictions the admin guys subjected you to.

Then they'll just revoke their approval for him to install Firefox altogether...
