Only two days ago, unrelatedly, I mused: "Aol. Do they even still exist?"
Apparently they do, though I have no clue what they're doing these days.

Besides giving some dial-up services to farmers in the middle of nowhere and clueless senior citizens, they're pretty much solely a media outlet nowadays. They most recently bought the Huffington Post, actually. Plus, of course, AIM continues to be one of the most popular IM services around.

Considering how flakey the AIM servers are, I suspect they actually abandoned the service years ago and it only still operates on autopilot in some datacenter somewhere.Â

Hmm... I haven't actually had any AIM outage in a very long time, and I use it quite often. I would say in the last year I had, maybe, a cummulative of 5 minutes of outage.

The irony of course being that apparently abandoned stuff that runs on autopilot is where AOL gets half of its revenue from, nowadays.
Also, take a look at the step-by-step instruction, it's hilarious. I remember being annoyed by the number of hoops Rapidhare has its non-paying users go through, but apparently that's pure luxury compared to what AOL does with its paying users. I didn't know companies still pull those kinds of stunts in 2011.

Oh, never any major outages. Just a few minutes here and there that lead me to the "something rebooted or failed over without human intervention" conclusion.

Their headquarters is still about 2 miles from my house, so after the dust settled (mostly) from the Time Warner fiasco, I checked out their job website. It's sort of a montage of 20-year olds hang gliding and partying. I have nothing against young people, but let me just say it didn't describe a work environment that I'm familiar with. A short time later, I found a job ad for "System Analyst" they posted on Dice. The actual job description was very clearly project accountant. So they don't even know what their people do. Outside of hang gliding, I mean.

Well, they own HuffPo, so they're probably pretty busy not paying writers.
