This is happening to me as well, and now I've reverted back to the original layout.

Why does Toshio Kakei wish me good morning in Japanese and then goes on to say "Have a nice day", only in hiragana? That doesn't make any sense, it should be katakana. Or is that term so common it got converted into hira??

I think you missed the part where this is someone else's tweets. I don't speak that foreign gibberish, only good ol' Texan English!

I didn't miss that. I just didn't find it interesting enough to comment about. So I thought what else could I do with this, hoping to find something that might help to derail the topic. Then I saw that guy with a really awfully looking orange skin and for a second thought about posting his avatar here, 5 times larger, with a stupid and childish comment next to it. Then I was curious what his tweet read and, interestingly enough, I could actually read it and understood what it said. So I thought if I post about that here, people would think I'm smart. And now you think I accidentally your point, which saddens me.

Yeah, sorry, I could have been more precise.
Some people have problems with it, though. A guy named D3vR send me an @ tweet giving me a bit of help on... something. I think WordPress. So I followed him to be polite. A few months pass, and he posts a couple tweets where he's being a total dick of the "oh I'm at a restaurant and the waitress is a retard"-type. Which bugs me a lot, because I used to work retail and I know how shitty it is, and I know how shitty customers like D3vR are. So I unfollowed him, and tweeted a little note saying I was unfollowing him due to him being a dick.
Anyway, I checked my @ tweets just now*, and he sent one a couple days ago saying, "Um... do I know you even?" He originally tweeted *me*! What a douche.
*) The real Twitter WTF: people who joined before a certain date can see @ messages in their main feed, even if they haven't followed the people who sent it. People who joined after the magic date have to go to another tab to see @ messages. There's no setting to change this behavior, and the help file lies about it. So I frequently don't see @ messages from people I'm not following until days after the fact.

Well, partly it was for convenience... like I said, I tweeted a problem, and he tweeted a possible solution, and you need to be following a person to see their @ mentions, so if I followed him I'd see if he replied back to me quicker.
I dunno, what's the etiquette in this situation?

I think your mistake was to imagine that D3vR cared what you thought about him. There's no point in even saying goodbye to a complete stranger. One attempt to help you in the past didn't really change anything.

I like to let people know why I stop following them, just as I'd like them to let me know. In the past, I've told people on Twitter that I unfollowed because they were being too spammy, and they responded and appreciated the feedback, so... I thought feedback is a good thing.
In any case, until there's a definitive book of Twitter Etiquette, I don't have any problem with what I did.

Douches gonna douche. You aren't doing anything wrong. I always try to be fucking polite to people; but it does require a high tolerance to douchebaggery, just because of the sheer contrast in politeness sometimes. It's like driving (car analogy), you can be polite as you please all day long, get happy waves from people, but you're still going to come across the jackwagon that tailgates, cuts you off, merges without looking, then honks at YOU because you didn't get out of their way.
