Teal'cs brow-raise was ripped off from Tuvok. Saw it myself.

    Well, that settles it.

I think I watched one episode when it first came out, but I didn't have Showtime to watch it every week. I didn't remember any of the character names, nor do I know what a Jaffa is. (But I'm going to just imagine you said "Jabba" and he's a fat green slug monster.)

Looks like it's on Netflix now. Is it any good?

  • @blakeyrat said:

Many people really like it, but I'd say it's more of a "bored and just want to watch something" rather than a "you should see this" kind of thing.

OK! I watched some Stargate! Here are my impressions:

    1) The pilot has boobies and a brief full frontal shot
    2) It also sets up the series in the most annoying way possible. ("With these coordinates, our computers will find two or three new stargates a month! WHAT A COINCIDENCE that matches our production schedule!")
    3) In the second episode, a guy gets killed using brain removal via stargate. Which was pretty cool, even though the rest of the episode was boring.
    4) The third episode, they go to a planet which is Tibet, do boring stuff for an hour, boring, boring, boring, almost get killed, come back with absolutely nothing to show for it.
    5) Next episode they go to a planet with no sun where there's a virus that turns you into a caveman. Carry the virus back to Earth (quarantine? what's that?) and everybody starts turning into cavemen. Defeat the virus, but otherwise have absolutely nothing to show for it.
    6) Next episode MacGuyver gets cloned by a energy crystal, and the crystal poses as him and makes up with his estranged wife. Therefore making energy-crystal-clone-of-Jack actually the most effective SG1 member so far, the only one who accomplishes something concrete without endangering everybody else on the planet.
    7) I think I skipped an epiode in this sum-up, but suffice is to say the SG1 team probably goes somewhere, puts everybody in danger, barely fixes the problem, then comes back to Earth with nothing to show.

Conclusion: the SG1 team is so incompetent that they should be playing this off as a comedy. Seriously, they send people to other planets, and it never occurs to them to quarantine the people?

Still, the show's reasonably entertaining, and its a good "have it going while I'm playing C-64 games in an emulator" distraction.

  • Well, if you don't really like the general style and feel of the show, it's hard to enjoy as a whole.

But, there are a LOT of episodes, and that bit you mention, where they never have anything to show for it, is lampshaded in-canon , in later seasons where the government puts agents in place to check up on the whole deal.

I really like it, but I understand people's objections. Eh. Fiction. Whachagonnado.

You may also try SG:Atlantis and SG:U. SGU is a different tone altogether. Tries to emulate BSG I R Serious Show tone, but with stargates (hey look at that, if you add another chevron, you can travel even farther! Also O'Neil makes a caemo and has gotten fat.).

I just received AssBro in the mail so I won't be watching any shows for the time being.

its a good "have it going while I'm playing C-64 games in an emulator" distraction.

I don't get this. How are you doing two things at once? Are you secretly a woman? You're playing game, or watching a show, otherwise you're doing neither very well and it's waste of time and electricity.

  • @dhromed said:

Eh, it's just Star Trek all over. Each week a different disease/spatial anomaly, etc. It'd be nice if they did something unique and new.

Yah, ok, I can't take the advice of someone who thought Assassin's Creed wasn't a boring mess of boring broken boringness enough to actually buy the sequel. Did they fix the bug where riding a horse, no matter whose it is, it a horrible crime beyond all imagining with the death penalty?

    @dhromed said:

Oh yeah, because obviously my computer running Netflix + C-64 emulator is using SO MUCH MORE electricity than the computer running just one or the other. Are you for real? Do you know how electricity works?

Look, since I'm not going to "Super King of the C-64 Championship Match" I don't care how well I'm playing the game, I'm just rehashing my memory for a video I'm going to record. And since I'm not trying to be "SG1 Numer One Super Fan" I really don't care if I miss a few lines of the show.

    Waste of electricity!

Dude. You have sequitur, non-sequitur and semi-sequitur. Those are your options when making a series. There is nothing "new" to be made in that respect.

I have different priorities. I say Ass I was a prototype hurriedly published to get some finances running so that II could be made. II is like a different game.

    @blakeyrat said:

That was annoying, yes. It also has nothing to do with riding a horse.

It's "explainable" why everybody in the land wants to attack you, but also changed in II, where guard suspicion is implemented differently. For example, you have to pull shit to make guards start looking out for you, and you can do stuff to decrease their suspicion.

    @blakeyrat said:

I really don't care if I miss a few lines of the show.

Ok. I tend to not waste my time/attention watching a show I don't actually want to watch, but whatever works for you is fine by me.

  • @dhromed said:

They released it without subtitles. Even if I were a fan of the gameplay, I can't get behind any game that thinks it's ok to say "fuck you" to the disabled. (Or even just the people who need to keep the volume down to avoid waking someone else up.)

So it's Crackdown, but less fun.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get back to EarthDefenseForce 2017, which is basically Serious Sam but somehow even MORE cracky.

I wholeheartedly admit that Ass I had some serious issues.

    UPDATE:

I just played a few hours of AssBro and they managed to fuck up the interface flow that was so nice in Ass II. Can't rebind Backspace. Map key doesn't resume game from wherever. Move controls cannot be used in menus. Map controls are dodgy. They dropped the control icons in favour of labeled icons. :(((

Also, the attack button often does nothing. Ezio just stands there all derp and then gets a sword through his face. I contemplated faulty mouse button, but the attack key works properly when I'm not in a fight. I assume I'm doing something wrong, but this is very, very, very frustrating, obviously.

But you reward them for it by BUYING the sequel. This is the frustrating thing to me. If you buy a product that you admit has "serious issues", you're saying, as a customer, "I WANT MORE SERIOUS ISSUES PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND SELL THEM TO ME FOR A LOT OF MONEY I WILL PAY IT!" Which, again, is something I just can't get behind. This is why shitty products exist.

If you're playing a game designed for an Xbox controller, you should be controlling it with an Xbox controller. Not that that excuses the bugs, just saying.

  • Summary: I like all three games. They are worth my cash.

These serious issues did not hamper my joy much. I gladly gave them my money as a reward for what I think was a good product.

What's a showstopper to one man is a minor annoyance to another. Some of the issues are serious and unforgivable (unskippable cutscenes, the 4-level deep exit sequence), but they're also offset by all the things that I loved, and the net result is a game that for me ends up way in the green end. We will not agree on what sort of issue is egregious or minor, or even on what constitutes an issue at all.

Ass II fixed most of the serious issues that I personally found unforgivable in I. It's on my favourite games list. Now, because I liked I and II so much, I'm a little Stockholm'd into liking AssBro, but I have to admit that so far it's a little less enjoyable than II.

Nothing beats the sword sound effects in I :)

In general? Agreed. In this case? Bollocks. I had no problems with I and II. II's UI control was stellar when I learned to ignore the mouse. Bro's UI issues are Ubisoft's fault and not mine.

Major USABILITY issues like "lack of subtitles" should be punished regardless of the quality of the rest of the game. If the game's developers couldn't be arsed to support the disabled, then fuck them.

But we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. Even though you're clearly in the wrong, and I'm clearly right. As always.

I'm growing curiouser every time I use a game that is very obviously created for console and ported to PC. (wich is basically every single [action] game these days). Fallout 3 wasn't as obviously consolish.

One of these days my controller-curiousity will reach that special breaking point where I can be arsed to get one.

    You gotta believe in something.

Remember that episode of The Simpsons, where Lisa goes to Nelson (the school bully's) house, and he has a poster on the wall with a picture of whales and a mushroom cloud reading "Nuke the Whales," and Lisa asks, "do you really believe in that?" And Nelson replies, "gotta nuke something!" It's like that. Except there's no nukes, and no whales, and the thing you believe in actually improves the world instead of creating radioactive fallout.

I was quite amazed with dragon age II in this respect. A buddy of mine has the xbox version and i'm playing the PC version, and the interface is actually specfic for the platform.
The xbox interface has this ability wheel that is mapped to your 4 buttons, plus using a trigger as ALT key sort of to get a additional 4, and on the PC you have the quickslot bar mapped to 0-9.

Quite a nifty bit of platform localization.

Yeah but the graphics are mediocre and on average is not a great game, is only good.  I expected more from Bioware.  Lately new games have being a bit disapointing.

They got bought by EA. What did you expect would happen?

Although, despite that, I was actually impressed with how awful Mass Effect 2 was. It's like they took all the ME1 writers, scooped-out their skulls with melon ballers, then asked them to piss off the fans of the first game as much as possible.

I quit playing the demo because the whole thing felt wrong; both the UI and ingame interactions. The character models are awesome, though. And that's it.

    Most awesome cameltoe, though.

  •  i liked MA2 as well as DA2, the stories are just fine, perhaps not as great as baldurs gate or KOTOR, but good enough for my tastes. Besides they're just games, i don't see how people can get so upset about stuff like that.

Were you awake during it? ME2 has so many ridiculous plotholes, it's shocking... from the first minute. The story, except for a couple of the loyalty missions that were ok, was completely awful. And Cerberus is not only completely ineffective, it's full of assholes. (Sure, rebuild Shepard's entire body, but don't fix Joker's legs you asshats!)

The plot holes raised sooo many questions. If the Normandy was so expensive, why does Cerberus have one? Where did they get it? Do they have more? Why don't they just put a shitload of mines around the gate the Reapers are going to come through? Or just tow it into a sun? Boom, game over, 20 minutes. The Council doesn't believe in the Reapers... during the course of the game, you land on a Reaper ship that's been there for centuries. The Council never found it? It's just sitting there! So do you tell the Council to send a ship to check it out? No, you blow it the fuck up... why did you do that, you dumbshit!

And most important, why doesn't the game give you ANY option to tell Cerberus to fuck off? These awful incompetent dimwits are utterly failing to do anything except get dozens of colonies killed by their horrible experiments that they can't even keep track of, and the worst dialog option you can choose is, "oh well I guess I'll work for you... for now." WTF Shepard? You don't owe those asshats anything, get on a shuttle and take the fuck off. Why can't Miranda die? (Actually, she can, but killing her is very, very hard.)

Why does the game let me control Joker (in a retarded and useless stealth level), but doesn't let me FLY THE SHIP? I wanna fly the ship! Why is the end boss the dumbest thing I've ever seen in a video game ever? And that mining mini-game! Even Bioware admitted that was completely unfun. (Which brings up the obvious question, "then why didn't you kill it before shipping?" but whatever.) Weapons have ammo now, but since we previously established they didn't, we can't just SAY they have ammo, we have to make up some DUMB SHIT thing about replaceable heatsinks which makes NO sense, and it makes equally NO sense that every (superior ammoless) weapon in the universe was replaced by the replaceable heatsink version in 2 years... that's some fast fucking development and adoption. Especially since here in the real world, armies frequently carry into battle weapons designed in 1914.

The only way you could think the ME2 story was good is if you were asleep during it. I've seen Syfy original pictures with fewer plot holes.

  • Well call me crazy, i just don't mind so much, call it willfull suspense of disbelief.  But I just had a fun time playing out the story and didn't mind all these gaping plotholes you mention. I've long given up on RPG's that actually let you make choices, just go with the general flow of the game and enjoy what happens. I don't stop and think if it actually makes sense, or decide to see if i can do the exact opposite of what the game expects me to do.

If you don't give a shit about the quality of the story, all you're doing is playing a mediocre, repetitive cover-based shooter. If you wanted a cover-based shooter, why didn't you buy, say, Gears of War? Then you wouldn't have any of those boooring conversations distracting you from the cover-based shooter action.

    You are crazy.

  • Maybe ME2 has somewhat different gameplay aspects that, regardless of the story, make it a more enjoyable cover-based shooter than GoW for stratos.

I wouldn't know as I hated ME2 gameplay and never even watched GoW, apart from an awesome machinima dance parody that I can't find anymore :( ("gears of war dance" yield sonly shitty crouch-dancing. Paltry!)

  • I'm not a very big fan of shooters, ME 1 or 2 certainly don't top my list of awesome games, and i certainly prefer a rpg where you can make your own choices and you can be evil or good or apathetic or whatever, but seriously, I know of no game that ever got that right. KOTOR perhaps came the closest.
Next to that I also have the uncanny ability to enjoy JRPG's where the notion of having choice is completely alien and you simply follow a predefined story as linear as possible.

I however lack any and all ability to get upset because some company made a game differently then I would have liked. I simply choose them based on my preferences and either like them or not, and if I don't then that is a lesson learned and that games studio will probably not have me buy their games any time soon.  Black Isle (RIP), bioware, square enix however are not on that list.

Yes that's actually exactly one of the things I didn't like about morrowind and oblivion, something I think they improved upon immensely with fallout 3.  There was choice, lots of choice, but no story, or hardly any that related to my actions. Too much sand for the box.

Well i never said or intended to say that i don't have any complaints about games at all. I just don't see the point of getting worked up about it.  Also on the subject of elder scrolls, that expansion on oblivion fixed a lot of it as well shivering isle's or something. Of course not for the main game, but certainly for its pocket universe.
