Why do recruiters always call at ass-o'clock in the morning?

Really guys. It's 9:30AM. I'm not properly coffee'd yet, and you want me to talk about life-changing shit without sounding like an idiot? This sort of conversation shouldn't happen before noon. EVER.

Also, why do you always sound so damned chipper?

  • You got it easy. My workday starts at 7:00 AM.

Now those are hours I could agree with. Daylight is for suckers.

    I love this site.

I can't say I've heard 9:30 described as ass-o'clock since college. I have no idea what they were recruiting you for, but I'd guess there's a good chance that the work would start before 9:30 on a regular basis.

Yeah, though I'm still waking up at 9:30; a process that lasts to around 11:00.

But still...this is a business call, and it seems relatively safe to conduct business between, say, 9am and 5pm. Especially if you're going to contact your prospective employer that same day. (I have no clue how these things work, since I've never used a recruiter, but this seems reasonable.)

    Really?

Also, I'm up at 6:30 am so..

  • I hate mornings with a passion.

I literally need three alarms to go off to ensure that I get up (basically, the first two are warnings, the third is the "okay, you REALLY should be getting up now" alarm), at which point I check my emails and Twitter on my phone. I usually then make a tweet along the lines of how mornings are the devils work and\or how I hope whoever invented them died a painful death.

In any case, provided I get caffeine and\or sugar every couple of hours, I'm pretty good throughout the day. (At work, I've gotten my breaks down to an art that ensures that I get caffeine every two hours).

I fixed that by setting my alarm later, instead of earlier like most people do.

When it's set to earlier, I wish to sleep and so I snooze it and fall asleep again.

When it's set to later, I get an extra half hour, and combined with rythm-conditioning that makes me wake up around 7:30 anway, it's a very effective method.

I used to have my alarm set for 7, so I could leave the house at 8. It ended up being that I would sleep for another half hour anyway so decided to set my alarm to 7:30, which was all well and good, until I started sleeping through that alarm and sleeping later and later, and ending up arriving later and later.

It's come to the point where I need to change my alarm tone on my phone or buy a new alarm clock that makes a different beep\buzz sound every so often to make sure that I will actually, at the very least, wake up and look at the time.

  • You could just go to bed earlier.

  •  That helps a lot.

  • I have a friend who's like that, constantly whinging that he can't get up in the morning:

"When did you go to bed?"
    "3:00 AM."
"How much sleep do you normally need if you don't have an alarm?"
    "9 hours or so."
"Ok, retard, the math here is pretty simple..."

Yes, I know people hate sleep... you're working on something, you have to abandon it to go unconscious for a third of the day. Hell, I don't even like having to get up to pee when I'm working on something... and that only takes a few minutes!

But at some point, you're going to have to do the math and figure sleep out. It's a biological need, not something you can just wish away.

  • Pah, sleep. Useless waste of time. Four hours is enough I've found.

What if you reduce coffee intake?

I generally get about 7-8 hours sleep each night, five or six sometimes if I lose track of time (I can generally guess my time based on my current internet speed, anything remotely faster than dialup means most people are in bed). I'm just not naturally a morning person, I guess.

  • @Douglasac said:

Well, try 9 and see how it fits.

    The rule isn't "8 or less", it's "~8", see.

  • What if you reduce coffee intake?
I don't drink coffee or energy drinks. Or alcohol.

When I say waste of time it's because I live in a rural area and there's nothing for most people to do but get completely hammered and spend until 3AM screaming and shouting in the streets. There's no point in even trying to sleep until that point.

Unfortunately for those of us with significant insomnia problems its not the math that is hard it's the lying in bed for 4 hours before finally drifting off to sleep that causes problems.

You might want to consider moving - I live in a rural area and no such thing happens. Hell, even in the deep south shit like that doesn't happen
