• The question is not if CS is TRWTF, we all know the answer to that. I just like pointing it out when I'm caught off guard.

Note: Please see embedded annotations for WTF location. I know some of you have trouble with that sort of thing and I don't want to discriminate against you.
The box there is a tooltip; you can't see my mouse cursor because its camera-shy.

• Oh my God, who the hell wants ORANGE window decorations?

• Rehosted, so the image actually... works.

And yes, the window decorations are disgusting.

• Garbage Person

I use orange (and neon pink) on various godmode accounts. It's a visual cue reminding you that you're there for a specific task and to get it done and GTFO. Of course, since this guy seems to be surfing TDWTF in his orange window, he's TRWTF.

• I guess "fatbull" is having some fun with feeding bogus values to the rating script.

I am.

About a year ago I noticed this forum includes a textual description for a rating of 0, but no way to actually rate a thread 0. That's when I found out I could simply call ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_ctl00_ctl02_ajax.SaveRating() with arbitrary integers as often as I wish and CS would happily add my new rating to the existing ones. The rating overview page would still show only my first rating.

Now count the WTFs in the previous paragraph.

Back when I was a student doing my year in industry I had access to both the test and production servers of a document management system.  All server tasks, monitoring, DB access etc was performed through Telnet sessions.  It only took one (fortunately, non-serious) instance of being-on-prod-but-thinking-I-was-on-test for me to realise that colour coded Telnet windows for  each environment was the way forward.

But... but... SaveRating is C#! That's server-side code! You hacked our server!?

No, the "Loading gif" thread was just really, really good. It was composed of 47383.4% Awesomium.

+1 useful idea.

My RDP account for the developent server is pink. For the staging server, it's green.

• I just prefer to use hideously garish color schemes on my work computers. 1) it makes my home computer that much more pleasing; 2) Windows has severe problems with focus-stealing programs in its ecosystem, and a harsh visual difference between a focused and unfocused window can be critical to me when most of my time is spent smashing the keyboard. (Mostly hitting the insert and scroll lock keys, since they're two of the most important.)

Thanks for hosting the image, Blakey.

function alert_args(status, args) {
var s = "";
for (var i = 0; i < args.length; i++) {
s += "\n"+args;
}
alert(status + s);
}

ctl00_ctl00_bcr_bcr_ctl00_ctl02_ajax.SaveRating(
-Math.pow(2,32),
function(){alert_args("success ", arguments)},
function(){alert_args("fail ", arguments)}
);

returns

success
new Array(-234280877.22, 'Rated ? [-234280877.22 out of 5 / rated 18 time(s)].', 'window.open('/utility/PostRating.aspx?PostID=249582','','toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=400,height=400');', true);

Not when it's the corporate approved production issue tracking system or an in house (but different division) built monitoring program or any number of other poorly designed crap that some of use have to use to do our jobs.

What would a modern business be without desperate dependence on poorly made yet unmentionably expensive third-party enterprise utilities? Anything else would just be bad for the economy.

(This isn't like in Linux land where you have so many choices of utility implementations that users get confused and frustrated.)

I got to dodge that bullet, well mostly, only have to use Lotus Sametime Connect (their IM POS).

I know I'm spoiled by working with good employers, but I'd just not install them (and either use a better replacement or just... not use it at all. Depending on what it is). I mean, our source control is Team Foundation Server, and it sucks... but even it won't interrupt your work with pop-ups. It will interrupt your work by locking-up your code editor while it updates or commits.

Anyway, I guess what I mostly take offense at is classifying it as a "Windows" problem, instead of a "shitty software" problem that has nothing to do with the OS. Remember when OS X was new? Focus-stealing all over the fucking place, from old-school Mac Classic developers who never had that problem before. (It's possible to steal focus in Classic, but only from another one of your own windows.)

Me too, thank God. It was touch-and-go for awhile.

On another note, "Sametime Connect" is the most retarded synonym for "instant message" I've ever heard.

"Sametime"? Seriously? God, even their branding division is incompetent.

Reminds me of the "Movie OS" GUI from the original Jurassic Park movie. Apparently quite a few people had that idea.

The usabillity
issues of TDWTF's forum software are at least on par with focus stealing
though. So I'm afraid, but you have to quit posting here now.

• @Xyro said:

Filed under: but really I don't have this problem with Linux so what's up with that?

Not sure (although it wouldn't surprise me if there's a WM which prevents focus stealing altogether by default), but it's an easy problem to solve in Linux (or on any other OS which supports multiple concurrent users, I suppose) if it ever arises. You simply stuff the offending program into a VNC session, and then it can't touch your real desktop environment.

Oh shi--

• So it seems that, TRWTF is, as usual, CS.
