Name some good movies that you like!

  • I love to watch Hollywood movies. Good movies are released at theatres in Hyderabad.
Real bad ones can be downloaded from Internet using torrenting software. Some you can buy DVD.
Which movie you liked so much that you bought the DVD? What do you recommend?

I like Harold & Kumar & Jennifer Aniston & Angelina Jolie & George Cloney movies.

  • If I had to give a top five:

    The Matrix
Star Trek: First Contact (I like all Trek but this is one of the few that felt like a movie and not a long episode)
    Vanilla Sky
Inception (what can I say, I like films about dreams)
    The Terminator

    Damnit, have some more.

    Aliens
    The Abyss
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (say what you like about it not being a true successor, I agree, but it was still a DAMNED good film)
Life Free or Die Hard (same) (I assume this is what you meant because it came up when I googled Die Hard 4.0)
How To Train Your Dragon was awesome too.

ED: Your friendly neighborhood btk here fixin the names of your movies.

  • Movies I seen.

My policy is to buy movies in the Awesome list, even if I've already downloaded them in HD. Consider it sponsoring of a good effort.

  • The original Star Wars trilogy, most of the Star Trek films, anything by Mel Brooks, and anything with Chris Farley in it. That's about it for me.

    Vanilla Skies <-- Not heard
Inception (what can I say, I like films about dreams) <-- Hit movie, but total confusion.
The Terminator <-- I like this movie the best. All 3 parts.

    Aliens NOT WATCHED
    The Abyss NOT WATCHED

Die Hard 4.0 (same) Forgot already.

I too did not like 30000 B.C. Real crap film. Can't believe all those elephants trained to build pyramids. That's insult to all the slaves who died building htem.

http://blakeyrat.com/2007/05/how-bad-is-terminator-3/ My quick and dirty review. I try to ignore the whole, "Terminator 2 ENDS THE FUCKING FRANCHISE YOU IDIOTS" point and actually review the movie on its "merits"... but your mileage may vary. Long story short: it's a bad movie.

    @medezark said:

I know you have to take away my Internet badge or whatever, but I never got the whole Firefly/Serenity thing. I've seen about 3 episodes of the series and the movie, and it's all just kind of meh. If you're going to do a sci-fi western, you have to come from the other angle like The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr or Wild Wild West did. (Actually Wild Wild West was more of a western spy show with sci-fi elements.)

Then again I don't like Buffy or any other Whedon shows, either. So.

  •  Firefly the series is just not very good.

Hmm, you might all hate me for this and I say this as a sci-fi fan, most sci-fi series are shitty to some degree, the only thing that make them watchable are the fact that they have loyal customers that will overlook almost anything because they like the gender.  They are low budget, cliched, bullshit scripted, poorly acted and produced, so basically they are shit.

Sorry folks but it is true, btw I found Firefly+Serenity ok so my brain is rotten beyond recognition

  • @blakeyrat said:

    WHAT?

Have you seen the woman?  The show is another crappy teen tv series but she is hot

  • @serguey123 said:

Of course. But there's a huge difference between, say, Earth 2 and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Hell, there's a huge difference between Farscape and Lexx, and they're both cheap-ish "B" series. (Of course the irony is that the first 2 seasons of Star Trek: TNG were actually shit. But it got better. I doubt Earth 2 would ever have gotten better, even if it had been renewed.)

And every so often you get something spectacularly amazing, like Blake's 7 or The Prisoner that makes it all worthwhile.

I personally would love to see a space travel show that could go an entire season without introducing:
    1) Characters with psychic powers
    2) Negative space wedgies
    3) God-like aliens

Seriously, let's put these tropes to rest, please. The episodes on those topics are the worst, by far. I'd go as far as saying that the new Battlestar: Galactica was so good specifically because it managed to go a whole season without relying on any of them.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Do you realize how depressing is that some of the "new" sci-fi series are rehash of shitty sci-fi series, BattleStar was Star Trek poor cousin and V, well it was a shitty tv series about lizards that want to eat us (still is but with less shittier sci fi effect that doesn't make it suck any less)

I mean is there nothing new and exciting to watch?

Other than that BSG was very good, in some aspect even better than the original

The 70s Battlestar: Galactica was completely different from Star Trek in almost every way.

New or old? I haven't seen the new one.

The original V was a ham-fisted metaphor for the rise of Nazism. So there's that. Considering how ham-fisted it was, they did an OK job with it. Secondly, it had amazing effects for the time, especially makeup effects.

    @serguey123 said:

I have no idea; I haven't had cable in about 5 years, and where I live TV reception sucks. I think the big thing right now is historical action shows.

Not what I meant, the plot was different but at some point they were concurrent and the difference in budget was big, even some of the retro stuff the show used was because of budget cuts.  So one was overshadowed by the other as they both were sci-fi space ship themed series.

Both are shitty on my eyes, the rehash is shittier for trying to copy a show that had man-eating alien lizards which is sooo 1920.

Ok, the make up was ok, and it has it moments such as the granny with the grennade (one of the best scenes in tv ever!) but the overall quality was low in my eyes at least

  • On the subject of modern sci-fi.... I'm finding myself disappointed often. Doctor Who is not sci-fi, it's just flat-out fantasy. Cheesy fantasy. Recently watched some of Outcasts - still a bit heavy on the cheese but not terrible.

Other than that, I've not seen any new series advertised or commented on in the past six months.

  • @nexekho said:

Yeah, but in their defense it's been that way since the late 70s or so... it's not like the modern series made the switch. However, the modern series does rely a lot more on deus ex machina, which is extremely annoying-- you can usually overlook it except for the series finales, which inevitably are solved by some deus ex machina in the last 15 minutes that wasn't even hinted at before. (Sure, the Doctor can turn young again and get superpowers if everybody on Earth chants "doctor doctor" at the same time. Right. How could a storyline that started with this end so shit?)

  • deus ex machina and nullus ex machina are totally annoying and disbelief-reawakeners in my book. Homestuck's most recent plot development is guilty of both at the same time, which is quite the accomplishment!

  • @dhromed said:

Anti-climax can be done well. Think Slaughterhouse 5 and the teapot.

    But, yeah, usually it sucks.

Edit: If I wrote Doctor Who, I'd do a whole episode which consisted of nothing but him setting up his own deus ex machinas using his time machine. So, for example, when people changed "doctor" to heal him, what actually happened is that future Doctor Who found some kind of cure and shot it into him with a dart at the right time. That would be epic.

  • Write the entire next Dr Who season as a thirty Xanatos pileup with nothing but chessmasters.

Slapping a Deus Ex Machina at the end of it would feel like sweet relief.

  • @dhromed said:

The Cybermen work towards their final goal. The Daleks work towards their final goal. Each episode features vague hints towards either the Dalek or Cybermen plan.

In the last episode, the Cybermen and Dalek plans cancel each other out and the Doctor eats waffles.

  • @serguey123 said:

Low budget hasn't really been an issue since the days of the original Star Trek and Dr Who. For the last 20+ years there have been a lot of Sci-Fi series that had big budgets with really good sets and special effects. A number of series have been cancelled because they were "too expensive".

Ultimately, they all end up sucking because of shitty acting, cliche infested scripts and the inability of the writers to resolve a story without resorting to a deus ex machina ending. It's a shame, because there have been a lot of really good ideas out there.

It wasn't awful, for a movie with a budget of "a truck and borrowing my buddy's cabin for a weekend." But seriously? When the first twist hit (the 5-letter word starting with 'J'), the movie totally lost me... then when the second one hit (finding his estranged son)... well, my movie-is-a-retard-meter went into overdrive.

    They tried, at least.

I think they explained it pretty well. He just tried to get a few points across. Then a couple of millenia of bullshit accumulated on top of that and you have... well, you know. It may not be the most realistic story, but as far as the human condition goes, I think they nailed it, especially with what's-her-name's reaction to it all. @blakeyrat said:

Ok, it wasn't the movie's strongest part, I would have prefered if they had left it to the audience to decide whether he was telling the truth. But personally I've seen movies vastly more retarded to let it bother me.

  •  Putting it on my view list.

I just wish they had a budget so they could do something like, hm, a FLASHBACK MAYBE?

They've been talking about nothing but history for an HOUR and all we've seen is the interior of this cabin and some dude's truck. How about, maybe gee whiz, SHOWING us what things looked like 14,000 years ago? I dunno maybe it was written as a stage play, but still.

    Such as?

On the special effect, I don't care much about them unless they have being done in an awful way, for example, Alien I is my favorite in the Alien series and later parts had better effects.  There are sci fi series and movies that have a good budget and quality special effects such as the new BSG but there is a crapload that does not make the cut, just watch the sci fi channel for a given ammount of time.

Also when is stuff gets adapted is radically changed like Flashforward, a classic example of book!=tv series

    > Bladerunner (Ridley Scott)

    > 2001, a space odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)

    > Brazil (Terry Gilliam)

    > Mars Attacks (Tim Burton)

    > Metropolis (Fritz Lang)

... but fortunately there's not only sci-fi when it comes to good movies :

    > Annie Hall (Woody Allen)

You should be shocked that despite low ratings they made two seasons.

The concept "brainwash sexy girls to be whores" you find "not that bad." It's like a TV show written specifically for sex offenders!

(Oh, I guess it's ok, because they didn't do it in "every chapter.")

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A musical about alien transsexuals from another planet... what's not to like about it?

V for Vendetta. When I was at school, we watched it for English. In the end, we had to write an essay on it and mine basically said "it's okay to kill people if you have a good reason for doing so". I didn't realise this until we got them back and I was told by the teacher that was basically what I'd written. I lol'd. We also tried to convince our teacher, who was British, that we should make Eggy in the Basket or whatever it was that V made.

How To Train Your Dragon. I wanted a dragon after seeing this movie. So sue me.

The Social Network. Yes, the book it was based on is Questionable. Yes, it was dramaticised. However, I still think it was quite well done all things considered. I'm not usually a fan of endings tahat sneak up on you, but it handled that pretty well.

Megamind: It was silly, and that's why I liked it. It was also good to see, well, hear, Will Ferrel in a role that was very... un-Will Ferrelish. Had I not have known that he was doing the voice for Megamind I would not have guessed it.

Someone else also said it, but I'm saying it too: Star Trek First Contact. This was, I think, the only TNG movie that had a plot that was not only plausible but believable. I would expect the Borg to go back in time to assimilate Earth, because that's something they'd do. I would not expect the Romulans to clone Picard because it makes no sense. A Magical Ribbon In Space that happens to allow you to be happy and live forever that Captain Kirk so conveniently fell into to help Picard stop an Evil Guy doesn't make sense and is not plausible (I know it's Science Fiction, but there are boundaries, people!). And Insurrection was a big WTF. It. Made. No. Fucking. Sense.

Victor\Victoria. Worth it just to see Julie Andrews "punch" a guy and kick him in the ass in the first twenty minutes, hear her swear (but she's Mary Poppins! She doesn't swear! :P) and because it gets sillier and sillier as the movie goes on.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It appealed to my Nerdy Side and now I want to watch it again but there are people using the TV and my lappy doesn't have a BD-ROM drive.
