Another report from wtf workplace

  •  The "developer" next to me is currently laughing. She laughed at something earlier on (as she does every 6-7 minutes) and apparently just kept on going by herself. By now I think she's laughing at herself laughing. Everyone else is working, she's just going at it by herself.

Am I the only one who works with mental patients?

Does being the crazy one in the office count?

So you find it uncomfortable that someone at work could be happy?? It doesn't sound as if she is so loud that it is disturbing you.

  • What's she watching on YouTube? When I put on Spoiler Warning, sometimes I laugh out loud in my cube... nothing wrong with that.

Request her to vacate your lawn, then.

There's always at least one crazy person in each office/department, I think it's HR requirement.

  •  Perhaps instead of posting here as the social inept person you apparently are you could have just asked her you know

Well, let's see... she laughs when the other dev coughs, sneezes, mumbles something while coding, talks on the phone, when someone in another room is talking loudly and sometimes for no apparent reason whatsoever. I'm not exaggerating. She does this all day every day. Right next to me. Within easy reach of my mouse cable which I'm pretty sure I can loop around her neck twice before she knows what's going on.@blakeyrat said:

Oh no, she's got Adobe Flash or whatever open on her screen working on a site. She was just sitting there laughing.

    Also,

Laughing is not a crime. Sometimes you can't stop.

  • My current cube-mate laughs to himself all the time.  I've learned not to question it.  One likely possibility I've considered is that he may run Google Translate in his head, translating everything he hears into Polish and back.  He also sings nearly constantly, and comes up with annoying nicknames for everyone.

I had to search that on google, but the results are weird. Why would you need metal balls? Wouldn't metal pipes be more useful to females?

Either case, most of the pages are blocked, so can't read more on this intersting subject.

    (a) how do you know it's a pair?
    (b) I rather believe it would be rather difficult for men to get fired for the equivalent, as it would be rather difficult for us to DO considering we lack of the necessary orifice...

I'm watching season 4 now because Netflix put it up. What's the deal with Sputnik, where one of the plot points of her intro episode is that her brain doesn't work with translator microbes and so she actually has to learn languages-- but then it NEVER COMES UP AGAIN and she talks to everybody else in the crew as if she had the microbes? That bugged me.

Also the scene where Aeryn is learning English. How would she know she's speaking it?

Unfortunately, I haven't watched that show in quite a while, so I can't speak on those episodes.  However, one thing I never understood was how the word "frell" could exist.  Wouldn't it just be translated to "fuck"?

Is it ironic that this made me bust up laughing causing confusion and curiosity among my coworkers?

The in-universe excuse is that the translator microbes don't do curses, because they're emotional outbursts that don't communicate a message. Which also explains why the aliens are mostly confused whenever Crichton tries to insult them.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I believe it is that because she learns languages very quickly, she's previously been able to learn the languages of most of the races knocking around the place. It's just that Crichton is the first person she's met who speaks English, so she has to learn it before she can talk to him.

As for Aeryn, I can easily believe that she knows she's speaking English - what I'm not sure about is how she knows what to say; if the translator microbes convert everything she hears into her own language, how has she ever heard an English word to copy it?

I imagine using the translator microbes would be like watching bilingual tv shows in "stereo", where you can hear both languages. (this is common in USA isn't it? I've only seen this in japan. I watched spiderman in english and Japanese simultaneously while I was there). Hmm I have to watch my DVDs again! One of my workmates worked on the special effects for some episodes, which I only found out recently.

  • Um,

    a) Because that's how they're used. I'm not going to explain how as I'm sure you can use Google.

    b) Well, if she's masturbating, the male equivalent would be to get the thing out and give it a good tug. Which is rather more obvious...

  • @Zemm said:

    1. That's not what "stereo" means

      2) Bilingual TV shows in the US are either dubbed (entirely, the old dialog removed), or subtitled. I know some countries overlay the new language over the old (Russia, for example), but the US isn't one of those countries.

      3) That's also not how translator microbes are portrayed in the show-- since they work by tricking the subject's brain, the subject doesn't "head" the foreign language at all. Heck, they don't even see the foreign language's lip movements (like in a bad kung-fu movie). (Exceptions exist for puppets that have poorly articulated mouths.)

    @Zemm said:

Except for the prosthetics and puppets, the special effects are pretty generic. Not only is the CGI only barely passable, but the alien ship designs (except Moya) are pretty lame. Hell, even Moya's own transport pods are lame. The Prowler is ok, I guess, but it has the same problem as the BSG Vipers, in that its far too small to be believable as a fighter. And seriously, to make wormholes, they just filmed a blue-tinted toilet flush and I'm not exaggerating.

The show is great due to it's clever writing, tendency to subvert every sci-fi trope in existence (it was originally described as "the anti-Star Trek"), and it's strange obsession with pee and poop jokes and bondage-lite costuming.

It also weird and "jumpy" editing, where every single episode plays like it was filmed to fill 2 hours, then chopped down to hell. I can only assume they're doing that on purpose... but it's weird when it results in a lot of things being unsaid... like the "grandma" character appearing out of nowhere for almost no reason with pretty much no introduction. There's also, for example, the last episode of Season 4 where Pilot closes the wormhole, they pass a Scaren ship going the other way on the back to the uncharted territories and... the next scene is Moya resting on a water planet. Things they don't show:
    1) Whether the Scaren ship got destroyed by the closing wormhole or not (they show is its comm chatter blipping out... but the comm travels through the wormhole! So.)
    2) How the pod with Aeryn, Crichten and Pilot got back to Moya without the GINORMOUS SCAREN WARSHIP parked RIGHT NEXT TO MOYA interfering with the process
    3) How they managed to rehook Pilot to Moya and somehow escape the aforementioned GINORMOUS SCAREN WARSHIP, which is shown to be faster than Moya under normal circumstances (even normal Starburst)
    4) How suddenly Moya's capable of traveling in a thick atmosphere, since Crichten and Aeryn are out in the ocean planet in a boat with no helmets. (Yes I know they did it before, but they also pointed out how much Leviathans hate it, and how difficult it was for them. Moya's supposed to be injured and resting on this planet.)

Anyway, that's an awful lot to leave unsaid!

  • She's just high as a kite is all. Leave her alone, she'll come down in a few hours.

  • There's a difference between having a sense of humor and being a loudmouthed pain in the ass. As far as I can see, you have a number of options for dealing with this:

    1. Ask her to tone it down a bit so others can get some work done

    2. Make sure she's taking her meds, ask her to share some of what she's been smoking.

    3. Put on some headphones and listen to music. If you don't like to listen to music while working, substitute earplugs.

    4. Ask her what's so funny and give her a withering look when it turns out she's laughing at something retarded.

    5. Strangle her with your mouse cord. This option has potential legal complications, not recommended except as a last resort.

I thought when a show is broadcast in two languages (analog TV) they use the "left" channel for one language and the "right" for the other - so that if you set it to "stereo" you'd hear them both. In my country there aren't many non-English-speakers so the only places where I've seen that button is in movies (eg Click or its parodies where someone presses the "ESP" button) or my holiday in Japan. However digital TV does seem to support multiple languages like on a DVD - though again I've never seen any option other than "1.English".

I always though that was creative license for the actors. At least Farscape explains how different beings from different planets can communicate: a version of the babelfish. Other shows like Stargate SG1/Atlantis don't explain it at all. See the differences in Earth languages in only a few decades or even years! Languages used on different planets would have evolved quite differently, so if they are cut off for centuries there is no way they could be speaking English!

He was saying how he could do the cost-cutting method of special effects.

Yes, this is one of the things that continually annoys me about the show as I'm going through it. Particularly since they started off in the movie (and the first few episodes of the series, I think) playing the language issue straight, and then just dropped it altogether. These societies are supposed to have been isolated since thousands of years before there was such a language as English, and yet they all speak perfect modern English. This on the same show where translations are routinely made more difficult by the source material often being in a very old dialect of Ancient or Goa'uld.

It's no better when they meet the Ori; it's explicitly stated that Daniel and Vala are not speaking English because the Ancient device is translating for them, and yet all the Priors sent by the Ori speak English. I suppose you could handwave that by saying that the Ori either imprint the Priors with a knowledge of English, or translate for them on the fly with Magic Staff Technology™.

Of course, alien races have their own languages (although the Jaffa also speak English, even when talking amongst themselves). Maybe someone's imposed a quota of one language per species, since the Unas also have isolated populations on separate planets who nevertheless speak identical languages.

I suppose it would have been fairly limiting to have Daniel (or equivalent) having to translate every exchange with local populations, and would have slowed down the pace too much. But they could have at least tried to handwave it away. Even just a line of meaningless science-sounding gibberish from Carter would have been nice. That's how they explain everything else on the show, after all.

  • Garbage Person

The various human and jaffa populations were isolated from Earth, typically not from each other. Presumably because of the goa'uld influence, they'd developed a general lingua franca - and even stubborn old O'Neill had to become at least conversant in fairly short order. I haven't watched the series for quite some time, but I seem to recall him saying "Did he say what I think he said?" more or less every time a native gave them a plot reveal, and wandering around disinterested every time someone else was interacting with teh natives - and his interactions with them were always more awkward than a simple culture gap would have made them.

Furthermore, I'm sure the symbiotes can do some fancy tricks other than making you an uber-badass - so Daniel and Teal'c can be doing the whole language thing. Carter is the stereotypical gigagenius, so she can join in the native language party, too. That leaves Jack being... Jack. Why was he in charge again?

The Unas language problem was handwaved in some episode or another - the languages share a common kernel, but vary planet to planet.

I'll accept everything that happened with the Ori, because any time you have omniscient beings imposing their will on mortals, language barriers aren't going to be a problem. Especially when those omniscient beings decide that the best way to impose their will in a shiny new galaxy is with space ships shaped like bedpans.

There is also one scene where they meet vala's father and there is mention of hers and his accents. So that implies English usually. So apparently not only is it English, it is American English that is everywhere!
