Vent thread #63254

  • I'm sitting here coding and two of my "colleagues" are discussing a horizontal menu bar that apparently is "thicker and shorter" than the old one. They then realize how hilarious it would be if they were talking about a penis instead of a menu bar and collapse laughing.

I'm working with f*cking 12 year olds. Pretty soon it's gonna be whoopie cushions and armpit farting in here.

  • Yeah, working with adolescent dipshits is no fun. On the other hand, I work in a place where the next oldest person has 20 years on me. I'm surrounded by people aged 50+ whose spirits were broken by this place long ago. They walk on eggshells around one another and take political correctness to a retarded extreme. It's depressing. Surely there exists a happy medium somewhere?

  • Sure there's a middle ground, games dev! Where older developers who can't keep up with the latest innovations wander about murmuring something about colour palettes with broken spirits aside from the occasional penis joke because they're still about as serious as when they wrote Duke3D ;]

  •  We make that kind of jokes ironically.

Goddamned unicorn industry, that. Of course, apparently all you need these days is one pretty good idea and to shit out an utterly incomplete product to become a millionaire. Hence Minecrapft. Those of us with... Grander vision and more respect for our ideas are still hunting unicorns..

Minecraft is even worse, because the "pretty good idea" is basically: "rip-off a complete game with a unbelievably shitty UI, and make a ...slightly less shitty UI for it." Also Java.

I must say, it's hilarious watching what jealousy does to people. Those who are incapable of doing get super pissed off at those who do. If you think Notch built Minecraft to be a millionaire then you're the WTF here.

The more I read this one statement the more it makes me laugh. "respect for ones ideas", this entire thread is turning into the main topic of discussion, an ego-trip dick-waving contest.

At least Minecraft is something. The one that really pisses me off is Farmville.

I don't know why "Notch" built Minecraft, but I do think it's incredibly over-rated. And I think most Real Gamers* would agree with me.

Well yes, but then I'm a big douche who thinks that everything I don't have is overrated. Farmville, Plants vs Zombies, L4D, CoD Blops, DNF, you name it. When I finally got Minecraft, I changed my mind completely. Now it's a good game with frequent updates for a decent price. False!

    - It's not a crime to enjoy wonderful graphics. I like a game more if it is good and has awesome graphics.
    - Contentless tripe and mediocre games are not a new phenomenon, and the intense increase of graphics quality in step with hardware capabilities is not related to it in the slightest. The bad shit of the past just doesn't get remembered much, so the current bad shit stands out all the more.

Oh for Christ's sake. It's turning into Slashdot. Soviet Russia "joke"? Fuck.

Look: saying "it's graphics and not content":
    1) Is based solely on nostalgia (meaning, your brain is tricking you into believing that)
    2) Is evidence that you haven't actually *played* any modern games. The quality of gaming right now is better than it ever has been ever. By a long shot. If you don't agree, that only means you're playing the wrong games-- sell your goddamned Wii and buy a game system

Edit: Oh, and by the way, you better tell Blizzard that graphics don't matter, because they just spent millions upgrading their (previously god-awful) World of Warcraft engine and models. WOW actually looks... not complete crap now!

I'm 20 and began gaming with my first "real" PC at approximatively 15 (I can't remember exaclty) with HL1 (pre-steam version) and CS (post steam version). So I'm not exactly nostalgic.

About modern games, I played COD4 a lot (I really mean a lot), I play MW2 and COD Blops on a regular basis. Along with Minecraft and Magicka

And I don't own a Wii or any console, strictly PC gamer

  • @dhromed said:

Not really. Though I'm not sure if it's more because my lappy is too old to play any of them (hence they are all overrated), or because I'm too jaded by the same old crap being churned out.
Even the "original" games all rely on the same established core mechanics. Amnesia, while being cool for trying to go a new way, is still a corridor run-n-hide adventure game. It's a one-trick pony that does the same trick over and over in slightly different ways. It had the potential to truely innovate (as did all the Penumbra games), but they fell back on established concepts all too quickly.

     @dhromed said:

Games of the past are not all better in some absolute way, so I wonder why you feel that way.

The games in question are Thief: The Dark Project and Thief: The Metal Age. How many games have you played lately where you felt the thrill of being somewhere you're not supposed to? A game that was genuinely hostile rather than slapping your hand and giving you icecream for being careless and stupid? A game that subtly enabled you to use your tools to your advantage, rather than telling you which tool to use when (if they even do different things)? A game where you could find out about the alarm, and plan your escape before setting it off? A game where the soundscape alone can draw you in, and plays a key part in your decisions?

Some games come close, but none of them hit all the right spots. Thief is still loved by many, and the evidence can be found in the many fan-made missions and campaigns.

P.S.: Thief: Deadly Shadows was mostly shite; I'd recommend The Dark Mod instead.

  • In the interest of getting alnong with your coworkers, may I suggest that you should bone up on dick jokes?

  • @Faxmachinen said:

How does that differ from games ten years ago?

I have difficulty believeing that most of them were significantly reinvented games, each a brand new experience, compared to what you call one-trick ponies and "repeated core mechanics".

Some of these mechanics are proven to work, and developers shouldn't discard them just to be teh innovativez.

    @Faxmachinen said:

    Thief

I am a fan of stealth and sneak-kills.My idea of a perfect play session is not alerting the guards and taking them out one by one, instead of going in guns blazing and relying on health and armor. Games I loved that allowed me to do that:

    - AssCreed I & II (there's little sneak element here, but gameplay can still revolve around staying hidden)
    - Manhunt I (never played II)
    - Fallout 3 (though less so; but I still invested heavily in sneak)
    - Commandos

So, yeah, I downloaded a Thief game to see what all the fan love was about.

Unfortunately, it was extraordinarily bad-looking. I mean, really, really, bad. I don't remember which game I got or what year the first one came out, but the shitty graphics were a real turnoff. I can take non-perfect graphics if there's a certain style to it. I can also tolerate dated graphics (Unreal, Quake; which look much better), but Thief was just too much of a bad thing.

Maybe the last one looks tolerable. I may go check it out someday.

Or are tvtropes puts it, "tropes are not bad." Blizzard has never, NEVER, built a game with an original idea-- how are their financials looking?

If you ever want an example of how petty I am, I stopped playing Assassin's Creed when there's one part early in the story where you are supposed to overhear a conversation though a ventilation duct. (Complete with sound filters to make it sound like the conversation is 2 rooms away through a ventilation duct.) That's all fine and good, but I couldn't hear the fucking thing... so I go to the game menu to turn on subtitles only to find that Assassin's Creed, a game made in 2007 did not have subtitles! WHAT. THE. FUCK! How does that even happen? That's a hundred times worse than the Bioshock 2 "hacking game doesn't work for the colorblind" thing, at least Bioshock 2 had the excuse that it was on accident.

Anyway, that was enough to sour me on the whole Assassin's Creed thing.

How does a story-based game in 2007 from a large studio manage to get released without subtitles? It still blows my mind. How many dozens of people must have been asleep at their jobs to make that happen? Microsoft probably didn't have "game must have subtitles" in their acceptance criteria, because it never occurred to them that someone might even attempt to ship a game without subtitles! (Hopefully they do now.)

  • Hey has this become a gaming thread?

Well then, Fallout 3, hated the fact that is capped at lv20, got bored when I got there, never going to play it again, nor any of the DLC

Metro 2033, great graphics, (one of the few games that actually makes my card work for its money) not much of a plot there

Gothic IV Arcania, nice graphics, no much of a character design, many small flaw in models, textures and animation, putrid dialogue

WOW, don't like MMORPG, tried once, too much walking, btw the graphics looked dated because it was old FYI, they added a bit of graphic in the expansion areas but they did not changed the core engine until now

Mass Effect, good game, I have only small issues with it, the gathering part is boring after a while, and tiring and a hell on your wrist.

Btw, I still love some of the text only games that I used to play more than some of the current titles

The most hard-core Thief players, the "ghosters", like to play each mission without leaving any evidence that anyone was ever there. Except all the missing loot, ofcourse.
Me, I only ghost when I feel like it. Otherwise I try to play using as few saves as possible.

I pretty much grew up with that, so I learned to fill in with my own imagination. It makes it real, but in a way that avoids the uncanny valley completely. Nowadays though, there are texture packs and widescreen fixes for the Thief games. And the fan missions often use nicer textures, so they look a lot better than the original ones.

You should try playing Dead Space (circa 2008), which doesn't allow you to remap your keys. Console users don't need to, so why would a PC user? That's right, yet another half-arsed console port that needs to be shoved back up the ass of the company that shat it out. Who the hell does this?!

In any case you didn't miss all that much. Assassin's Creed was an unfinished game gameplay-wise. It's like they spent 80% of their time building the levels and 20% populating them, which is a real pity considering how awesome the enviroment and game mechanics were.

  • @nexekho said:

Well, I just picked a random game that was kind of innovative (and kind of boring too). I was going to say "Q*Bert" but Qix was funnier. Trying to point out how ridiculous it is to say that there is nothing new in games except graphics improvements - because there has been nothing new in gaming since Cain and Abel. Old games are fun, and new games are fun - but the existence of new games doesn't make the old games less fun. Like dick jokes - always funny, never new.

  • @DOA said:

What happened is I kept playing for a few hours, then got pissed when it turns out that riding a horse is apparently "against the law". (Just getting on a horse and riding somewhere would cause cops to chase you.) I thought that was stupid, so I turned it off and gave it back to the friend who lent it to me.

Oh yeah, that particular bit of shit was invented specifically for AssII.

They made it slightly less draconian in a patch, but I don't remember the details.

    @ltouroumov said:

How do you lose save points?

It's unclear to me what happens when the connection drops during a save, but the save moments are plentiful and do not take that long, so chances are slim that it happens at all.

I mean, when your connection drops, the games doesn't exit; it's just paused. It automatically return to the game exactly where you were when the connection comes back up (or so I read, anyway. I have a stable connection).

  • The best was just after ASS 2 came out (or maybe during the beta), someone DDOSed the servers that allow you to keep playing.

It was like "This is exactly the worst thing that could happen.  And nobody in the freaking world (or maybe just Europe) can play the game because of hackers.  Convinced that it's a bad idea yet?"

It's not even really like it was DRM.  It was just more "annoy the fuck out of you."  I'm sure there was a hacked version in short order so all the pirates could play hassle free while the paying customers were slapped by annoyances.

Yes, although the first hacks attempts had issues, this was perfected in no time so..

It is hilarious how Sony is releasing firmware updates so quickly that they actually annoy users and  have bugs to combat piracy and then a hack is released in 24 hours, uphill battle if I ever saw one.

  • Back when I worked on RIP'ing software, my boss and I spent an afternoon talking about character recognition algorithms. The discussion wandered here and there, and we'd been using the letter 'P' consistently as a stand-in for "any arbitrary character."

We had spent a few minutes debating, with the door open, all the different methods that could be applied to recognize the "fundamental P-ness" of the letter 'P'.

We didn't know what we were saying until a coworker popped his head into the room with a strange look on his face, asking why we were talking about "the fundamental penis."

We all laughed about it, sure. Then we switched to a different letter for the remainder of the discussion.

How does a story-based game in 2007 from a large studio manage to get released without subtitles?
You should try playing Dead Space (circa 2008), which doesn't allow you to remap your keys. Console users don't need to, so why would a PC user? That's right, yet another half-arsed console port that needs to be shoved back up the ass of the company that shat it out. Who the hell does this?!

In any case you didn't miss all that much. Assassin's Creed was an unfinished game gameplay-wise. It's like they spent 80% of their time building the levels and 20% populating them, which is a real pity considering how awesome the enviroment and game mechanics were.

BOO HOO I CAN'T REMAP KEY BINDINGS THEREFORE THE GAME IS CRAP. Would you like a pity party? Did you actually play the game before judging it entirely based on the fact that it's a console port? If you didn't, well, it's your own loss.

The irony here is that it's perfectly possible to remap your key bindings in the PC version of Dead Space. I've done it. It wouldn't recognize the two extra buttons on my mouse, but everything else was fine.

I never mentioned gameplay. I merely remarked on how completely unacceptable it is to pubish a modern game on the PC without the ability to remap your keys. I mean I've seen other 99% ported titles where you're asked to press a key at the start (why? just show me the menu) or are told not to turn off the machine while saving (so... no pulling out the power cable then?), but never something so retarded.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to do that via the game menus. You didn't go about editing ini files, did you?

I used the "Controls" menu under "Options". Possibly you and I are playing different versions of the game, or something. I bought it on Steam very recently; maybe it was different soon after release.
