Support Ticket Ticket

  • This year I packed in my contracting business and decided to become a real employee again. At my new job I have already started to see some WTFs. The first being that I needed to get Visio installed, which required me to submit a a ticket to request a license. However in order to use the support system you have to be registered, separate from being a part of every other online system. And how do I get registered? Well I have to submit a support ticket! Fortunately my boss stepped in for me and generated that ticket. Hopefully this will be one of the few WTFs I see around here

  • Very typical. I had to take over support of a buch of systems around here. In order for me to be able to submit trouble tickets, I first had to submit a ticket to the Help Desk. In order for me to do that I had to be able to be able to submit tickets (not a typo). After three levels of ticket submission I was able to submit trouble tickets. Then the whole shebang was transferred to someone else. I opted to not be the go-between and asked the same guys who submitted tickets on my behalf just two weeks prior to re-submit them for the new guy. I work for the government. No shortage of WTFs around here.

  • Oh! Forgot to mention ... I'm leaving as soon as possible to restart my contracting. FTE is for losers. Um, no offense intended. Good luck. :-)

Or those that like getting proper benefits.

FTE with a company that has had double digit growth for the last 3 years, full benefits, overtime, generous leave, bonus, paid educational costs, employee share plan and being flown in to head office and put up in a hotel just for the Christmas party was too good an offer to turn down. I know what I am giving up but I know that I am a better engineer than salesperson - and the sort of clients I need to deal with don't give a lot of one man shops a second glance.

  • Okay, okay. My job sucks. I still enjoyed contracting much more than showing up at this job, day after day for six years. I did mention I worked for a government agency, didn't I? Regardless. MY job sucks. YOUR job sounds like ... fiction. Or history (dot com days ... oh how I miss them) or ... European. If anyone from Denmark or Sweden wants to swap, just let me know, ok?

Believe me I keep pinching myself to see if it is all true. I also worry about what comes with the big fat carrot. The company is actually Canadian, and to top things off they moved their US head office to 10 minutes down the road from where I live!

Your Help Desk doesn't have a phone?

What, and bypass the official Help Desk Support Email Ticket Process? You won't last a week around here with that kind of attitude about The Process.

Some companies have managers who understand the best way to have productive programmers is to take care of that kind of crap for them. Many of you may not believe that these managers exists...those of us that have them don't post much on TDWTF.

I used to have one of those. sigh.

Much preferred to my current (i.e. the last year) situation of not really even knowing who my manager even is. (It's been narrowed to two candidates instead of three, though.) It's good when a company does frequent re-orgs, it's not good when people "slip through the cracks" of them.

Where I work, a phone call creates a help ticket which is as good as submitted through email.
