World of Warcraft site fail

  • Some of you might be familiar with the game World of Warcraft, and some of you might know that the maximum character level in the game is currently 85. Also a website exists to view your character and his statistics, etc. A friend linked his character profile page, but I got the follow error:

It seems Blizzard has to release a few more expansion packs before we can use the Armory again.

  • It's a joke - 503 is the standard HTTP error code for "Service Unavailable" e.g. due to overload or maintenance.

All characters are under level 100, so "unavailable to any character under level 100" is a tongue-in-cheek way of saying "unavailable to all".

I hadn't looked at it like that yet. That's pretty genius and funny.

Another WTF is giving a 503 on every other request, although the Armory has been doing that the first version.

  • So... having a sense of humor is now a WTF?

God forbid you come across Twitter's failwhale. "THIS IS A TOTAL WTF BECAUSE A DOZEN BLUEBIRDS CAN'T CARRY A WHALE ITS TOO BIG!!!"

  • Raised an appreciative chuckle. Thanks for that.

The fact that the default reason for custom HTTP error pages is now 'to make a joke' is somewhat disheartening. Sure, it's cool when your audience is guaranteed to have an innate understanding of what the error code itself means - but Blizzard cannot make that assumption. A significant portion of their playerbase would get confused by a 404 error.

I greatly envy you, for you somehow have gone through life without the misfortune of having to deal with 99% of the users of the Internet who barely know the difference between an address bar and the google search field much less what a 404 error is. I could definitely see a WoW n00b getting confused about this. Not that I care, really, though.

    African or European?

  •  Oh, blakey was here... I guess that's the end of the topic as we know it then. Flaming will ensue.

I, for one, didn't understand it was a joke. I thought it was a genuine WTF. But then again I think we've established before in some other topic that I'm sort of a retard.

  • I think "404" and "403" are kind of an exception, because they seem on the way to become mainstream slang already. Wikipedia and Urbandictionary have mentions and there even seems to be demand for "403" underwear...

I find it somewhat unusual to make other HTTP codes into joke pages, though. I agree, that could get confusing.

Still, it's hardly a WTF, is it.

  •  No, not really, that's true.

I, for one, have never understood why people type "I, for one," instead of just "I". Flaming!

The reason you don't get the joke is that you're not the kind of person who would ever visit the Armory. If you used the Armory, you'd get the joke-- you'd either play WOW yourself, or have such a close relationship to someone who does that you're checking out their character or items.

That is why this isn't a WTF.

Urm - in order to see the 403, isn't it rather too late to serve a 403?

    404 underwear. Now that's confusing.

    Psych!

Now get out of my apartment before I knee you in the teeth.

I bought a chick a pair of those once. Worst purchase I ever made, because apparently writing it down makes it true or some shit. Women are strange.

500 Underwear. There are just some places you shouldn't go...

402 Underwear. Legal in the Netherlands.

  • I read that as implying that the administrators are level 100.  Since the post also indicates that "currently" 85 is the maximum character level, it seems they have designed in their own little version of the Y2K bug.

Or it could be an actual joke.

Haha, I'm actually giggling in my cube:

    • 411 Length Required

    • 413 Request Entity Too Large

Dhromed alread did that one.  In the post that you're replying to.

Say, you don't read tags much, do you?

You're missing a lot of the best bits if you read tdwtf that way!

I can't find funny in something that has already been posted? I do forget to read tags (visual filter skips sigs) on occasion too though; though I try to make it a point to notice them because of some key funny, but I am a mere human with flaws and habits.
