Everything about the Blog and post

  • Just everything. I can't believe there's a community of people who think living in a tiny apartment is the ideal lifestyle, as long as they have enough slutty anime pillows and action figures on their shelves. "World's most stylish?" Seriously? Ugh.

  • I was about to click the link at work, fortunately I saw the word "otaku" in the URL first. DNW.

Look on the bright side though, at least it's only a fad, like all the other embarrassingly screwed up subcultures that plague our generation.

  • Personally, I'm more or a milk-crate and cardboard-box decor kind of guy.

  • I'm more of a functional guy, if it works, fine by me, everything else is sugar coating. There are a ton of people with weird tastes, I wouldn't expend a dollar in any of this as I try to keep the amount of crap in my life to a minimum but to each it own, right?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We can debate about the interior, but I'd like to have one of those "tiny" "apartments" please.

I had no clue of course, but a quick Google search explained the concept to me:

In some post I have been pasting the sentences from MS Word, I blame my lack of spelling skills, MS (joking) and CS (not joking)

Well I don't have a floorplan or anything, but from the photos it can't possibly be more than about 900 square feet. Unless he has some huge room somewhere that he decided not to photo.

Which makes approx. 83 square meter. I understand you live in a country where there is plenty of available space to build big houses, but it's not the case in every country of the world. For your information, in Belgium, this make it a standard sized appartment (75 square meter) for a couple or a couple with one children. Some people can afford bigger appartement, or afford to pay for 80 square meter in the capital. This person live in Switzerland, where housing is more expensive than belgium. He probably pays a lot for this appartment. If you go to tokyo for whatever reason, you'll be happy if you can rent 50 square meters, appartements there start at 35 square meters as far as i know. In Finland, according to OCDE,in 2003, the mean size of housing was 37 square meter per person.

BTW, i'll say, according to picture, that appartement is more in the realm of 65 square meter, but it's still reasonable to me, as long as you don't have children.

~9×9m is the apartment I live in with my roommate. It's nice and spacious, because it's technically a three-bedroom family apartment (though admittedly a small one in its class).

My work room is 2.5×4m (10m²). That's a bit small, but manageable. I barely move form my seat anyway. When I went to live there, I annexed the two smaller of the three bedrooms, because I can't live in such a tiny space. So I have a work room and a bedroom.

I can't imagine living here alone. It's too expensive, for one thing, but also too big. I'm better served with a 40-50m² two-roomer, or something.

If we're talking about the decoration it probably is. Being somewhat interested in anime and the like, I've seen quite a few photos of otaku rooms. The majority can only be saved via copious use of napalm. Some need to be nuked from orbit. I wouldn't mind living in this place. The figurines, manga, etc would have to go of course or at least be stuffed in a closet somewhere, but other than that it looks good.

Ok, I'd burn the pillows cause they're friggin embarassing, but that's about it.

Oh, god... someone has a different taste than me!!! :O Kill it with fire!!

Seriously, there are a lot of people who like that sort of room and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. Just because it's not your taste doesn't mean it's bad. Personally, I don't like it either but if the person living there things it's cool or something, let them be. My place is covered with computer parts and clothing all the time, because I really don't care about my interior (unless I get visitors, then I tidy up). I know some people who would hate that, but it suits me just fine. What's the problem then?

If you don't like it, just ignore it and move on. :P Not that difficult.

FWIW my house is quite small at 128 square metres, plus carport and there are verandahs front and back and is on a 730 square metre block of land, which is fairly average for this suburb (newer suburbs get smaller blocks, but bigger houses). The funny thing is I'm not far from an IKEA which has lots of displays of small apartments: not common in Australia.

My sister taught English in a small town an hour's train ride out of Tokyo and her "mansion" was about 24 square metres, and it was considered decadent that she lived there alone. Her neighbour was a family of four. I spent a week there on holidays. It did have a separate toilet from the bathroom (with an actual bath) and a washing machine. The kitchen area was a small fridge and a small sink. The main room was both for sleeping and "living".

The smallest room you can live in in Tokyo is more like 2 square metres: A capsule hotel. I never went into one, but I wouldn't have fit in a capsule anyway: I'm 200cm tall!

I'm trying really hard to care about anything happening in Belgium but it's... it's just not happening. Maybe it's because I know absolutely nothing about Belgium except standard apartment size (75 square meters, apparently), or maybe it's because "Belgium" is the punchline to most jokes about Europe... I dunno. It's just not happening. Sorry.

That's true I suppose. If the glass shelves were filled with, say, Staney Kubrick movie memorabilia, and the bookshelves were filled with... actual books, and the pillows were shot directly into the sun, then it would probably be a kind of tasteful room.

You think there's nothing inherently wrong with a room decorated exclusively with posters, statues, and pillows featuring naked 14-year-old schoolgirls? ... we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

Look, it might be (marginally) socially acceptable in Japan, the most fucked up country on the planet. (Even more than Belgium!) But... I think the rest of the world pretty much universally agrees, "yes, there is something wrong with this." Fuck, even the disgusting human/animal hybrids the furries have are over 18, and they don't plaster them all over their house.

If the house was filled with, say, Godzilla merchandise, or Ultraman, or stuff from those crazy Japanese horror movies like Uzumaki, it would be a totally different situation. I could respect that. Especially Godzilla. Godzilla rocks.

A messy house is just messy. Nothing wrong with that.

The good news is that if they ever decide to make The 40-Year-Old Virgin 2: Electric Boogaloo they can save a ton on set design by just renting this guy's place.

Anyway, I agree with you in that I find it sick and twisted and wrong too, but if he likes it (and it's legal) I don't really see the point in fussing about it. :P Then again it was quite funny to see that page and read the comments. I suppose it is a WTF. xD

You wouldn't be able to tell, judging from those wooden shoes they wear.

  • Erm, if by your own admission you "... know absolutely nothing about Belgium ..." then perhaps you should visit it. It's a great country, has amazing beer (not like that pisswater the Yanks drink) and terrific food. Plus, most of the women are beautiful! Oh, and I think the USA is about the only nation left on earth that still uses square feet instead of square metres. Even the UK has 'got with the program' as you would say, and property here is (almost always) measured in square metres.

Not too far from where I live there is a store selling those exact figurines (I have no information about any pillows, though). It's located in one of the most busy shopping streets of the city and has a large showcase. It's also been there for several years and apparently has neither gone bankrupt nor gotten closed down by the cops yet. I think you should alert the UN. The perversion is spreading.

That data was what had actually interested me. I had thought there were a Wikipedia article though (after there once was a detailed article about the chain of command inside the Zerg hive cluster from StarCraft). So I'm surprised as well.

I once knew a girl like that. She was about as neurotic as they come, although half the time I think if she was just acting out the behavior she saw in her cartoons. Occasionally she fashioned herself pretending to be like those Japanese freaks who fashion themselves pretending to be like American Californian freaks. It was a pretty sad state of affairs. And it was all reinforced by a screwed up online community of imaginary friends that existed solely to warp each other's sense of normality and civility. I think she was about 18 or 20 or so last time we interacted. I can only hope she's over that phase by now, although last I heard she was going through a goth/bondage thing with her mouth-breathing loser boyfriend. It makes me sad just thinking about it.

The way they effected her is one of the reasons I despise those subcultures...

Oh, god... someone has a different taste than me!!! :O Kill it with fire!!

Seriously, there are a lot of people who like that sort of room and there is nothing inherently wrong with it.

(Even more than Belgium!)

You mean the same Belgium that gave the world that Dutroux guy?!

But... I think the rest of the world pretty much universally agrees, "yes, there is something wrong with this." Fuck, even the disgusting human/animal hybrids the furries have are over 18, and they don't plaster them all over their house.

Half-an-hour browsing the Encyclopedia Dramatica should thoroughly disabuse you of that notion...

has amazing beer (not like that pisswater the Yanks drink)
Only southerners and idiots drink what the stereotype says Americans drink.

Also, in a tragic twist of irony, the vast majority of the American pisswater brewers are owned by foreign companies (including the worst offenders by Belgians), and the vast majority of brewers of proper beers are American.

Sorry.

Say He who only has seen 1 swiss appartement and jumps to conclusions :-D
Come whenever you want to Belgium for a visit, i have a free room of about 6 square meter. But i have to warn you. The only things we know about USA are joke about their dumbness and their curious geography :-D

  • if you speak about Anheuser-Busch InBev, it's now mostly owned by brasilia who make cheap beers, a tragedy for all belgians
