The Spirit of Christmas

  • We live in a townhouse development. Lots of homes double-attached in rows. Recently, they yanked out some trees that were pushing up the curbs; they chemically treated the stumps, and some time later, removed those too. As such, a bunch of us have these gaping holes in our lawns. After some recent heavy rains, these holes have turned into small lakes.

My neighbor has one of these on his lawn. He USED to have lots of lights on his tree. Without the tree, he decided that he would be creative and lay the lights out in a criss-cross pattern on the lawn (they have stopped mowing, so that's not an issue).

While inquiring as to what he was going for, I noticed that he laid out the grid such that when moved into place on the lawn, a lot of it would be under water.

Upon pointing out the possible flaw in his plan, he proudly stated: No problem, these light strings are designed to be out in the rain.

I responded that rain constitutes one drop at a time hitting, and hopefully, being directed away from the electrical parts, and that I didn't think submerging them was wise.

    He insisted it'd be fine.

Finally, it was time to flip the switch. One of the submerged fuses held on just long enough for a surge to build up in the main circuit, which overloaded about 80% of all the strands that were on the lawn, roof, and so forth.

However, for a very brief moment, he had the only underwater Christmas light display I had ever seen, and it was Brillant!

  •  He should keep trying. With a bit of effort he could have a really cool light display and a mechanism for keeping pesky carolers off his lawn.

"DECK the halls with... Hey, why are my feet tingling?"

  • Did you get it on tape? If AFV isn't interested, maybe Home Improvement/Tool Time is.

So they took your trees and gave you a moat instead?  I'd say that is a win.

I'd put a rowboat in mine!

You could have pointed out that humans are able to survive unaided considerably longer in the rain than under water

  •  1:2 scale model (you didn't specify what scale)

That was a fun wikipedia trip. Are the Discworld books good? I realize they're "classics", but that doesn't necessarily mean they're good. Kinda like how Paris Hilton is famous for no reason, some books appear to be "classics" for no reason (that I can fathom anyway).

I have bought, read and enjoyed every single one of them. But of course, YMMV

The Luggage and Death are my two favorite characters in the series.

Of course humor is always extremely personal but yes, I think you should :)

  • All of my Christmas lights use 12-24 volts, with the transformers safely away from the rain (summer is the wet season, so lots of rain this time of year). This year I only put out the LED lights as they are much brighter and user less power than the incandescents. I wonder how well those would go submerged?

Picked up Wyrd Sisters because it was smiling at me, all alone in the English aisle.

  •  Hilarious opening line.

Don't you just want to keep quoting stuff? But then to explain why the line is so hilarious, you have to explain the previous pages/chapters too, which a) is too much of a buildup and b) leaves you ROFL so people don't have a clue what you're on about.

  •  It's subtle.
