Join the gym: the workout is finding the nearest club

  • We went to their website to find their exact address and found the "Find a club" page. Go on, try and see how easy it is to find the details for a specific club, especially in Brisbane. Oh, and no cheating by turning Flash off!

Most websites get you to enter your postcode and then they return a list of clubs close by. That was obviously too easy for this web designer!

  •  Looks like a classic case of "Works On My Machine" certification. The designer saw that the design works well with the five evenly-spaced clubs in his test data. So obviously it will work well with any number of clubs...

  • If you put the mouse in just the right place, it will cause it to jump from club to club as the mouse is detected, without you needing to move it. It's like an automatic pan effect. This rocks. Why wouldn't you like it?

  • Obviously "find a club" is actually a synonym for "I really want to make flash based video games instead of doing what they pay me to do"

The Zoom function looks promising... until you realize it only zooms a tiny bit each time you click it, the zoom animation takes a full second or so (and you can't click the button while the animation is running), and it stops zooming when the points on the map are still ridiculously close together.

Flash (the tool) is ok, but man Flash developers suck.

Edit: the real WTF is a town named Woolloongabba.

Whats wrong with Woolloongabba? Its a perfectly good Aboriginal name. Just like All of these other ones

  •  The worst part is the map dragging "functionality."  If you click and try to drag the map, it goes the opposite direction from what you'd expect.  I guess that's just the way things work in the Southern Hemisphere....

Sucks to the people in Canberra and Darwin. Why even provide a bubble to click on if there are no locations? You're only going to disappoint your visitors and make them sad.

Huh? It centers the location where you clicked. There's no dragging. It sometimes zooms out though.

PS: Ok, it zooms out only when you click outside the map, ie in the sea. While not tremendously intuitive, it makes sense.

Personally I'm more concerned with the inability of searching by zip code, and the super-scroll-speed of the list on the left.

Map data is always hard to present and for some reason business owners usually don't realise exactly how hard.

I worked with a regional government agency for some time and saw a number of examples where people wanted to present for instance "every bus stop in the province" or "every monument in the province" and didn't realise what a mess that becomes.

Well if you are living in Canberra you already are depressed, so it doesn't matter. And if you are in Darwin you are spending all your time bending your elbow anyway - so again it doesn't matter

I thought they played Knifey-Spoony in Darwin. Or am I thinking of Cairns?

I see what you mean... You never see that sort of map centering functionality these days though; in every other map software I've used in the last decade, if you drag the mouse, it drags the map.

  • I have no idea what you people are talking about. Soon as I clicked on "Find a Club" in chrome it crashed my Chrome :(

  •  Aside from the page requiring user action before showing any content, and the back button operation being almost completely broken, I really can't see anything wrong with this website?? ;-)

Probably where-ever the prime minister is a nudist named Andy. TRWTF is our toilets generally have large diameter (100mm) pipes so the water goes straight down.

    That's why I'm now a Flex developer ;-)

Where else could you play (one of) the national sports?

The only thing worse than Flash developers are Flex developers who insist they're not Flash developers.

My official title is "Interactive Developer" so I use whatever I need to do the job. I guess that can be a WTF since I'm really the only technical person here.
