Some people... (web design/customers)

  • I got the following forwarded to me from CS:
"Hi, I placed an order online. But I may have made a mistake. It was like ordering in the dark, since your pages show up as gray on black, they are unreadable on this laptop in the sun."

How do you deal with that as a web designer/IT person?

I'm seriously considering calling Kenmore asking them why my fridge is empty... it should be full of beer! Something's wrong!

  • My fridge has the same bug.  Maybe we can file a class-action suit.

  • Yet this person still managed to place an order? That's clever.

Anyway, I recommend that all e-commerce web-sites from now on are to have a big banner on the first page that says "DO NOT USE THIS PAGE ON A LAPTOP UNDER BRIGHT LIGHT CONDITIONS", and then a button that shows you've accepted and blames you when war breaks out. Hell, all web-sites must have this. God forbid someone misread an item on 4chan.

  • The fix for this is to remove the lighting element and back from the LCD screen and to face TOWARDS the sunlight so that it illuminates the screen.

  •  So... is your website grey on black? Or is that just his TN-panel at a slight inclination?

Tell customer service that the work around is to have the user push ctrl-a to activate the easy viewer.

  •  Send the guy instructions on how to change the color scheme to "High Contrast"  in Display Properties > Appeareance.

Or teach him about "View > Page style > No style" in browser menu.

Seriously... Maybe... just maybe... probably not... he was telling you in a very smart-ass-like way that your site's color scheme sucks?

Like others have said, he's probably subtly hinting that grey on black is a shitty color scheme.

How would I deal with it as a web designer/IT person? I'd pick a readable color scheme. I'd also do some usability testing of the site, but God knows nobody does that.

If you want to go all the way, you can use tools like these:   Colorblind Web Page Filter   Color Contrast Analyser Firefox Extension
