QOTD Thread

  • In the spirit of the "Joe Board" maybe we can start a "Quote of the Day" thread...

Here's a gem I heard just one hour ago from a coworker struggling on a Perl project:

    "Perl sucks for gathering data."

  • "Good programmers don't need error handling because their code doesn't have errors."

I was pulling the leg of a published SQL guru shortly after I started working with him... ;)

  • "Why don't you just use _______?" - where _______ is a product or technology invented and/or popularised after the project at issue was completed.

Lately heard about Smarty when there are already some four thousand templates written in a custom proprietary template language by four people who already know said template language.

  • Why not leave Joe Board as the official thread? It's already 6 pages and going strong...

  • Well, let's see. First of all I didn't see it, which seems like a valid reason since it's in another section... Second of all it's probably going to get pushed down pretty quick. Life will go on...

  • I've seen some real winners in my day.  Here are a few I can remember:

    ----------------------------------------------------

(We do it that way) because that's the way we've always done it.

What do you mean I can't put a SQL database file on a shared drive?

I don't use a UPS on our servers because I've never had a crash before.

I had to create an access database on the fly because my report has to traverse the SQL dataset several times to compile the data.  If I put the data into an access database, it frees up SQL Server resources.

  • "People will never replace machines."

He meant to recite the old saw that goes the other way, but his Freudian slip had more truth to it.

I think what we need is a board where we ONLY post quotes, so no replies, comments, etc (like the one I'm writing right now).

Joe Board has gotten too cluttered up with comments, especially the off-track comments using CSV :P

That's not really *that* bad, is it?

  • Why developers should never talk directly to customers:

Me:  I don't understand the file format.  Can you give me the algorithm to decipher it?

Huffy Customer:  Don't throw those ten-dollar words at me!  I don't know what an algorithm is!

    or Clientcopia

  • "Backup their data, format the drive, reinstall the OS and copy their data back over.  Then when they bring it back in in a few weeks we can charge them for doing the same process again and blame it on the OS"

That was the "solution" to the massive overheating issue due to sticking something like a Geforce 7900 into an Asus Mini Tower (190 x 310 x 300) along with an addtional DVD rewriter and memory....

Clientcopia's become unmoderated, the spam and flamewars on it are painful to see now. Overall still pretty decent.

Another (entirely moderated) site in the same vein is Overheard in the Office.

  • "There's the right way and then there's our way"

This companies name is usually substitued for the "our" in the above since it still rhymes, that ones frequently repeated by the Director and lead devs :¬(
