Congrats on making the frontpage of Digg

  • So what was the traffic volume for the joe board?

Neat -- 415 Diggs so far, too =-)

I know we've been Dugg a few times before and when that happens traffic generaly goes up about 10-20%. I took a quick peek at Adsense, and it's about 10% higher that most days around 3PM.

I thought a Digg would bring in more than that, but there's probably just such a large intersection between the two sites. I'd be curious to see what a Slashdoting would bring. Feel free to submit some stories to slashdot =-)

  • If I'm going to submit to Slashdot, I will probably dummy up a quick blog, link to several TheDailyWTF articles, then basically write "So, what do you think of this?!" Then I'll submit my blog.

Final numbers: 21.3% increase in traffic.

On another note, what kind of crappy-ass server do you need to be taken down by the "Digg Effect"? I've got TDWTF running on a single-proc P4 3.0 w/ 1G RAM.

I suspect quite a few of the sites taken down by Digg are hosted on shared servers, and sometimes the admin of those machines just pulls the plug. (Sometimes there will be a page there telling you that the account's bandwidth ration was exceeded.)

There was one story a few months ago about an old Mac serving a web site (classic Mac, 68K processor family, I think). In spite of the machine's age and specs, and in spite of Digg, it was still gamely serving pages. It was slow, the images mostly timed out, and you had to retry, but it hung in there.
