Music's gonna get'ya (not spam I promiss)

  •  While going over old addons I had installed on my Firefox, I encountered a strange addon called "musicsgonnagetya".

    Loading image...

Since I had no idea what this was, I decided to google, only to find that google found NO results for it.

    Loading image...

I now have addon installed and even google can't even tell me what it is.

  • At least Google now has a hit for you: this post.

So why did you install the addon if you don't know where you got it?

  • It's right though, we do all need a bit more magic in our lives.

Uh-oh.  It's possible some malware has installed this directly into your browser somehow.

Do you know how to go digging around in your profile folder?  It would be interesting to find the plugin and reverse it.

  • It's not a plugin, but an addon. It's possible that it's available in your profile directory, in an extractable XPI file containing readable JavaScript source code.

Judging by its version, it was written by a fan of pi.

  • Garbage Person

Post it somewhere and lets have some TDWTF reverse engineering time.

  •  Get music, before music gets you!

  • In soviet russia, you get music...

Wait... That one actually works. goes to obscure russian site

  •  Yep, find the XPI and post it somewhere :) We're gonna have a field day with it ;>

Seems pretty obvious to me : it's a Mozilla easter egg announcing Björk's next album title (only available in icelandic version, though).

Björk has an album? I always thought they were just random sounds to test a person insanity.

    I actually didn't notice that.

I am still suprised, even if it's a malware/spyware, there should be a few results on google, not 0 (or 1 as it's now).

Hey man, I think Bjork is a great guy and doesn't afraid of anything.

Björk is a girl you know (last time I knew).

I genuinely thought you knew something I missed xD I thought she had done something crazy once again and I was the last person to know :(

  • What do you mean?

If a google search on it yields no results, it can't exist.

There is much better music from Iceland than Bjork. If you're looking for a female singer, Hafdis Huld is a good place to start.

For music not so current, try Bellatrix, a great Icelandic band who were around about 10 years ago, and Jakobinarina, a rock band.

He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty.... no, wait a minute, what I meant to say was: Well, if you really wanna get pedantic, it's not a plugin or merely an addon, it's an extension.  That's what the precise Mozilla terminology is for it and that's the name of the subdirectory of the profile folder that it'll be found under.

("Addon" is a more generic term that includes plugins, extensions and themes.)

Anyway, let's see it.  Java decompiler at the ready.

dhromed may have confused the issue there by fluffing the meme slightly.  He should have said
"I think Björk is a pretty cool guy. eh squeals like a stuck pig and doesn't afraid of anything."

Yes, I should have said that, true, my mistake.

múm. Sigur Rós. They're a pretty good deal better than Bjork (Hey, Takk is blindingly gorgeous) -- but I still think Bjork is pretty good, though it varies greatly with album. Volta is crap save for I See Who You Are. Vespertine is all good. I have mixed feelings about Medúlla. Oceania, Mouth's Cradle and Triumph of a Heart are fucking awesome; the rest of the songs I have a hard time getting into.

  • Oh, btw...

  • I asked Google Scribe, which knows all. It said:

  • @dhromed said:

at least I can ensure she was still in 1995 at Reading festival. I just had a *Near-Life-Experience* while listening. Most songs from "Debut", but acoustic versions of techno-sounding songs, played on strange wooden alien-like instruments... totally unforgettable. I still love her songs to this day but I didn't understand Volta.

  •  Anything interesting when you right click on it and choose "About musicsgonnagetya"?  Or "Visit Home Page"?  Although, if it is malware, that last may not be a good idea.

You mean there's all those jar files, and there's no java in any of them, they're just being used to zip up some js and xul?  How bizarre.

    Awesome.

TRWTF is that the OP hasn't noticed the random rickrolls?

I'd recommend using noscript but I'd go with the theory this is the work of a friend too. Thanks for giving me something to do on April 1.

Yes. But ".jsar" sounds crappy and, more importantly, doesn't include any silly coffee-related pun, which, as we know, is required by spec for all things that have to do with Java.

  •  Perhaps this entire thread is a subtle, elaborate rickroll.

TRWTF is I never realized .jar could be interpreted as, well, the word "jar".

Or if I ever did, I've forgotten since.

  • /me wonders if Solaris' .flar format was ever meant to be a pun related to a well-known series of fantasy/SF books...

That's the case with most books that can be described as "fantasy/SF". In fact, I'd go as far as saying that "fantasy/SF" is just a euphemism for "really shitty sci-fi." (Disclaimer: I have no idea what book we're talking about.)

But really, there's no point to writing sci-fi anymore since the best possible book has already been written. (Remember when that happened in 1999? Wow what a crazy year.)

  • @blakeyrat said:

Does it have Jesus riding a dinosaur?  DOES IT?   No?  Well then, it's not the best possible book, is it?

She wasn't good in 2008 at the big day out! She pretty much got booed off stage. But then trwtf was the organisers who put her on immediately before rage against the machine.

Yes, they are Javascript archives.  But they are also zip files with the file extension changed to jar.  I always thought this was wierd.  Why not just called them whatever.zip

  • @El_Heffe said:

No kidding. I have nothing but contempt for people who can't tell whether to open a ZIP in Java, MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Mozilla Application Suite/Sea Monkey, Firefox, Thunderbird or other Mozilla software, Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, or just as an archive.

So that people aren't tempted to muck around with them and then depend on that behaviour and see it break when Moz decides to change the format for whatever reason they see fit.

My Amazon link was safe to everything except the literary tradition, and the reputation of all science fiction everywhere.
