No home-built pc

  •  Olympus does not like hom-built pcs but I believe some of them are way better than bought ones

  • I don't get it.  Tech support personnel are generally not known for their abilities to deviate from scripts, and do-it-yourselfers are generally not known for wanting to follow tech support scripts.  Add to that the fact that a mis-wired USB port can fry your camera, and I can see why they don't want to touch that one.  Any competant do-it-yourselfer doesn't need their support anyway.

  •  But does a normal user do a firmware update for anything ? I'd rather think a do-it-yourselfer would do that.

  • What's the point?  The EULA likely already states that operation isn't guaranteed under any circumstances, why bother singling out a subset?  Not guaranteeing operation doesn't even reduce their support costs, because they are still going to answer the call and walk the user through the standard troubleshooting steps.  When the user is told their hardware isn't supported, they will simply take it back for a refund.  The only loser will be Olympus.

  •  Godammit, now I have to buy a new PC

  • "Operation is not guaranteed when using a USB port that is not directly part of the computer."

Does that mean it'll work if you run the updater on computer 1 while the camera is plugged into a USB port on computer 2?

Also I presume it means you can't expect to plug your camera into a random, unconnected USB extension cable and expect it to update? I've heard of user stupidity, but this takes the cake.

  • Think you'll find they're referring to hubs, fool.

Wow, are you posting from a parallel universe where USB Hubs don't exist? Amazing!

Please send detailed manufacturing specs for this "USB Hub" of which you speak. My mission commander back at AltiPortal would be very interested.
