Flash workaround for iOS devices

  • Last night I was browsing the news on my iPod Touch and pulled up an article on latimes.com. An advertisement caught my eye. It appeared to be an Internet Explorer window displaying a Volvo ad. I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. I did quite a bit of examining it to determine whether or not it was an intentional attempt to grab the viewers attention. After closer examination, IE was opening an .swf file from Temporary Internet Files (the username was shown in the path). It was a screenshot. Not only that, but it also showed the taskbar, which included an open Outlook email message which I could see part of the subject. It mentioned Volvo or Flash, or both. I can only imagine that it was a request from the person's supervisor complaining that Flash advertisements weren't displaying on some mobile devices, and to please fix it. I didn't think to grab a screenshot until after the page reloaded displaying a new ad. I kept refreshing to try to get back to it, but all of the ads that have loaded have not been Flash workarounds.

  • And for those that doesn't read bricks of text:

Volvo ad shown while browsing on an iPod. Shows screenshot of IE opening a flash movie.

  • Thanks for the translation :)

    Wow. Shocking.

  • So it's not spam?

  •  I can euthanize, if so desired.

  • I'm so confused. Do you guys think this is spam because its my first post? I've reading tdwtf for awhile, but haven't even lurked the forums.

  • No, because your first post was a giant text-block. This forum's editor has a curious thing wherein it will show a retarded WYSIWYG editor that doesn't work with vimperator for some browsers, and an unadorned textbox where you guess what HTML codes are allowed in others.

Also the WYSIWYG editor overrides Ctrl+I, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+U, and probably others. If you were using those, tough shit.

In the first case, you can't type HTML. In the second, you must type <p></p> around each text block. Newlines are not enough.

Poppycock. It wasn't remotely offensively formatted. We were just 'avin' fun.

    +1

You can click the "HTML" button. Does Vimperator conflict with that?

Doesn't cause issues at all if you use the "plain text" editor.

Basically, imagine the absolute dumbest possible way of implementing a rich-text textbox, then be prepared to use something much worse than that.

  • I actually used the plain text editor. I am a walking giant block of text generator. I'm glad I chose to put spaces between the words. I can't imagine the whining had I left those out.

  • How is it qworse than the dumbest way?

I can  type and do bold things and make oblique references and eerything else, so what is the problem with the textbox, specifically?

I mean, CS's implementation is fucked in ways that are hard to comprehend if you're not an Elder God, but let's not conflate things for the sake of kvetching.

    Not sure if serious...

That's what we like about you!

  • I don't even want to think of the bandwidth this abomination uses up. And on phones no less, where bandwidth tends to be horribly limited and horribly expensive. Thanks, Volvo.

And good job CS wiping out my post there. Way to fail.

In vimperator you hit Esc to get out of a textbox and use your regular hotkeys (such a 'f' to show a number beside every link/button/whatever). But the CS editor isn't a real textbox, I guess, so Esc doesn't work. Which means to "click" the HTML button I have to literally click with the mouse instead of tapping 3 keys on the board my hands are already sitting on. That's all.

Yeah, Community Server is sure a pig!

    ... oh.

True. TinyMCE is the editor used, and it's really quite good, but it uses an iframe to create a contentEditable document.

We have established that CS disables it in unsupported-by-name browsers such as Chrome, and also that it conflicts with an esoteric firefox addon.

Other than that, what's wrong with it?

Well, there's the thing where if you hit backspace once it rolls a die to determine how many characters to actually delete. The thing is, I haven't used it in so long, I've actually forgotten most of the quirks... but even in "supported" browsers, there were tons of bugs.

I think I'm better off using the unsupported Chrome, and doing it myself.

    Seriously, what?

  •  Oh yeah, the backspace thing.

Okay, forgot about that because I'm so %$#! used to it that manually undoing it destructive work is lodged in muscle memory and I also sometimes do it in other editors.

    :(

    Ok, what more?

I'd have to go back to Firefox to gather more intelligence, and that ain't happening.

    I'm going to stick with:
