Knowing how reCaptcha works you only need to do the second one in that picture, the first can be wrong (as they don't know what it is either, it's from a text that OCR couldn't read).

  • Recapcha tends to have some very odd, and very particular capchas these days. Lots of punctuation and weird combinations of normal letters that are just really hard for even a human to decipher.

Your's still take the cake though. Just type pentagram, crucifix, pentagram, schwa to verify.

It's not that hard to read.

  • Meh, its not like you need to enter both words.  You do know how reCAPTCHA works?

Actually, it reads more like "1FXκFI(e1⊗ƒ1)." to me.

Not that hard to read, no, but in order to answer the captcha you have to solve it for stationary eigenstates of the hamiltonian.  Man, these captchas are getting tricky!

Well if there's one thing computers are terrible at, it's math. This captcha method is brillant!

No, sorry, I'm not familiar with every single website out there... Do tell?

  • One I got the other day:

I'd like to know what word the OCR program thinks that first blob of ink is.

I'm sorry, are we as casual browsers, expected to do readings before entering a captcha? Are we going to be tested later on? Do tell.

It shows you two words in a picture, and you type them in the text field... right? There's nothing in the reCAPTCHA interface that states or suggests otherwise. So if honestly believe users should somehow telepathically know ... whatever it is you're talking about ... then you're part of the (usability) problem and not part of the solution. If the user doesn't understand how to use the program, that is the program's fault. Period.

If The Real WTF (tm) here is reCAPTCHA's poor usability implying that both words need to be filled-out when in actuality they don't, well, then, let's change the conversation in that direction. But dropping the "well you should have already known that" anvil on the topic helps nothing.

I'm not saying anything about this one.

Naw, it's a stylish text separator.

Yeah, I'm always getting those confused.

I've been kicked out of a lot of libraries.

That doesn't seem right.  You're saying the first one is always the OCR and the second one is always the human verification?

    @http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReCAPTCHA#Operation said:

Scanned text is subjected to analysis by two different optical character recognition programs; in cases where the programs disagree, the questionable word is converted into a CAPTCHA. The word is displayed along with a control word already known. The system assumes that if the human types the control word correctly, the questionable word is also correct. The identification performed by each OCR program is given a value of 0.5 points, and each interpretation by a human is given a full point. Once a given identification hits 2.5 votes, the word is considered called. Those words that are consistently given a single identity by human judges are recycled as control words.

reCAPTCHA is exploiting us users to do OCR work for old books. First word is unknown, straight out of the scanner and shapemangler, second word is already OCRed by other users. If you type both in, and the KNOWN matches, you're let in, and your answer for UNKNOWN is being added to the database. Once a majority of identical answers for UNKNOWN is measured, it is moved to KNOWN with that word as the answer. The scanner system isn't perfect, and picks up mathematical formulas, funky "scene separators", and such. But these always land in the UNKNOWN field, so you can type whatever as the answer for it, as long as you get the KNOWN right.

And they depend on most users not knowing it - otherwise, they wouldn't bother about the first word.

It's not a captcha, it's a Roscharch test. Type in what do you see in the blob.

As other people have pointed out my claim about it being the second one is only for that specific image. One is an actual CAPTCHA, the other is an OCRed word that they don't know what it maps to, so they can not validate it.
