Acronyms

  • What does FML stand for?

    According to thefreedictionary.com, one of the things it can stand for is "Famous Last Words".

    W╛T?

  • Fuck my life.

    Or Free Mailing List.

    Maybe that Famous Last Words doesn't really stand for FML.

    You. Presumably. "Deodorising Application Unit".

    Hooray, someone got it right! I'm somewhat disturbed that it took until the fourth response, though. I thought the mangled "WTF" in my post and the tag at the end would be enough to clue people in.

    Ah.

    It appears I can't dedicate enough braincells to acronym parsing. Every single one is currently occupied with the fact that I'm going on leave in 2 days, 4 hours and 39 minutes.

    So, you communicated poorly and are now acting smug about it?

    My, where have I seen that before?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    XKCD?

  •

    that reminds me, where's morbius?

  •  I think he and bstorer got married, ran off and are now lovingly fisting eachother's buttholes in some warm, summery place.

    I immediately got it, even without clues, so I don't think it's a problem of bad comunication.

    Or rmaybe I'm just that intelligent.

    If one's default reading is with a different tone, then it makes sense.

    But it's still bad communication.

  • You're using the wrong dictionary .

    ... not to mention the 97 other unverified meanings at the linked site, acronymattic.com!

    My favourite there being 'Flying Moose Lodge,' though 'Friend of My Life' comes a close second. IMHO. ;)

  • TRWTF being that FML isn't an acronym of course.

  • Depends on your definition of acronym. If you say "it's a word formed by the initials of a phrase or name", I'll dispute your definition of word.

  • Was the original post inspired by this?  Because I had to look it up too when I first heard about it (from a site that obviously didn't explain it).

    Honestly I'm suprised anyone made a big deal about it.  Would they also have changed the sign if the station served the hypothetical W, T, and F lines?  And if so, would FTW be an acceptable alternative arrangement?

    Pretty much every geek messageboard ever?

    No, I saw it used on a different website and had to go look it up. Found the meaning easily enough, but I was just idly flipping through a few lists of acronyms to see what else there was (it beats working) when I came across that one.

    Communication requires cognitive acts by the recipient as well as the sender. My estimation of the level of effort required to extract the intended meaning from my post falls well below the average for this forum, hence my surprise that the first few responses didn't expend it. Now, it's possible that my estimation was wrong, but it's also possible that you just weren't paying attention. Did you notice the mangled "WTF"? Did you notice the tag? If you noticed them, what did you think they represented? If you didn't notice them, did you wonder why I was posting this in the Sidebar?

  • Yea, Huffington Post has a (bowlderdized) explanation of the FML acronym, so it couldnt have been it.

    But I can also see FML being FaMous Last words

    Generally speaking, it is entirely plausible that, regardless of cogency, a person has not come across a certain Internet Acronym before. This is not a thing to be ashamed of, and the proper response is a clear answer, or an honest attempt at such. Lacking words like the highly communicative "apparently" or larger equivalent sentence constructs, I assumed your query fell into that category.

    @Scarlet Manuka said:

    I found it plausible that you fucked up. This was probably presumptuous on my part,  but again, teh class of tyop where tow characters (or in your case, a character and a border glyph) are tranpsosed is a fairyl comomn oen.

    @Scarlet Manuka said:

    Did you notice the tag?

    That too, I noticed.

    Consider the abbreviation "MK" , commonly used to denote versioning in engineering constructs. It means "MarK". While I had never before heard of "FML", I wasn't really suprised when the tag offered a similarly unmeter'd meaning, and thought nothing of it.

    @Scarlet Manuka said:

    It's the busiest forum, and closer to TDWTF's general discussion than General Discussion. Given the fairly soft boundaries between fora, I usually don't care much about such categorization, so I thought nothing of that, either.

    Do you find this explanation satisfactory?

    We good now?

    Now you're just taking the piss out of Scarlet.

    Pretty much, yeah, but I do have to mention this:

    Surely the class of typos where a character is replaced by a border glyph is rather less common... it took me a lot of searching to find something that approximated an upside down F.

    Oh, you know I could never stay angry with you! Yeah, we're good now.

    ... Let's just stick with "yeah, we're good now" for the moment. :D
