In case you missed it

Our city's shiny new light rail system had just been in operation a few weeks. Need I mention that the whole thing runs on computers? There's a server rack at every station.

Anyway, bravely volunteering to be a beta test passenger by neglecting to read the EULA on the back of my ticket, I hopped aboard. Ten more stops down the line a train employee boarded and headed for the rear cab. (These cars are reversible, with a cab at each end.)

As the train continues on its way, it reaches an intersection with a couple of freeway off ramps and two large main roads. Lots of traffic, in other words. Halfway thru the intersection the train suddenly comes to an emergency stop, refusing to move no matter what, blocking everybody but those lucky enough to be paralleling the tracks.

After a couple minutes of nothing, the operator comes out of the front cab and heads for the rear cab where the technician is hard at work installing Windows Updates or something. And here's the conversation I overheard:

    Operator: What did you do?

    Tech: Nothing.

Operator: Nothing at all? Are you sure?

Tech: Well I just logged in to the console for a minute.

Operator: Would you mind logging out?

Apparently the train is not comfortable with two drivers giving it conflicting instructions...

  • Well, it's bad enough you've got one in the rear and one in front without them demanding different things. The poor train is not even a year old!

  • This may as well be one of the best WTF's I've seen recently.

I agree.  It should've been built on ubuntu, that way only the GUI would crash, and the driver could've simply:

    set_speed dev/traincar1 dev/traincar2 dev/traincar3 14_mph forward 40 torque 0 brake override terminal0

    I mean, DUHHHHHHHHH.

Yeah, except really what would happen is he'd rm -rf dev/train* and the whole light rail system would disappear in ASCII order of the trains' designations.

Yeah, except really what would happen is Shuttleworth would parachute in and kick his ass for being logged in as root... That's sudobuntu for you.
