Automatically filling in passwords for convenience

  • I've just moved and Comcrap hasn't showed up to reconnect install a coaxial jack because the only one I've found in this place is rather broken, so I'm temporarily borrowing a neighbor's unsecured wireless connection (not a WTF in itself, the owner could just be a generous person).

So after I connected for the first time I got curious and ran off to the router login page, and was greeted with this:

WTF 1: It's the default password, 1234. Stupid, but more the user's fault.

WTF 2: That's not my browser automatically filling in the password for me. The router itself did that. So not only is it using the default password, it's kindly saving me the trouble of going off to look up the default password.

  • Perhaps it behaves that way only for the first login, and subsequently requires a proper user setup and password change.

You should change the password and find out!

  • Just tried - it still fills in 1234 regardless of what the password actually is. And no, it's still not Firefox doing it.

Slightly more "secure", but no less broken.

<Insert mandatory Spaceballs luggage combination reference here>

  • I'm not sure if that's more or less stupid than so many login forms that helpfully fill in "username" and "password" to indicate what the fields are for, despite that the password field is masked.

  •  Where I live it's illegal to use someone else's internet (or wireless connection) without their consent, even if they accidentally left it open. Also I think it's a dick move to go look around on their router. Was the next thing that you did look on the network for computers and see if they had any open shares with pornography? Or install some trojans?

How did you know the dots displayed were 1234?

Have you maybe considered asking your neighbor before you leech his wireless, so that he doesn't decide to sue your ass if he finds out? There's this thing called "common decency", you should give it a try sometime.

I'm betting the password was written into the HTML by the router.

Shared printers are much more fun :)

Your police/politicians are clearly bored. Have they solved all other crime then?

  •  My router does it better, but not by much. The WIFI encryption password is masked. And not even stored in plain text in the value-field of the input element. In stead it's filled in a few lines above that, in javascript, where it does reside in plain text.

Very useful. I don't ever have to store the plain text password. I log onto the router and copy it from the javascript.

    +1 setup-laff

Well, it's easier to go after the fat nerd stealing Internet and the soccer mom going 5 miles over the speed limit than the Mexican drug lord or serial killer.  Somebody might get hurt doing that.

No, it's simple economics. Druglords employ illegal immigrants and therefore prevent them from stealing jobs from honest hard-working Americans, while serial killers are valuable members of society once rehabilitated.

Fat nerds and soccer moms are just going to eat junk food until they wind up in hospital and eventually the grave, and who ends up paying the costs? That's right, the government.

Quiet, you.  What's the point in giving you back the Internet?  You'll just use it to buy wooden shoes off Amazon, solicit legal prostitution and psilocybin mushrooms off Craigslist, and ask Yahoo Answers "HOW IS DYKE PLUGED???"

    That's easy.

    A) my dick
    B) fist
    C) the other girl's strapon
    D) all of above, either simultaneously or sequentially.
