All Weather

  • Sadly, I didn't get a photo of this, so you'll have to make do with me telling you about it.

At the shops on Saturday I saw some outdoor equipment being advertised. One item was an "All Weather Table Tennis Table". On closer inspection it turned out to have the following restrictions:

    • Must be kept under cover
    • Not to be stored outdoors

Presumably it was indeed able to cope with all the weather one would normally encounter inside, under cover.

  • I presume the all-weather aspect refers to its playing status. i.e. you can happily play in rain if you wish, but leaving it out to get soaked when not in use is not advised. This really isn't a WTF.

Ah, but what if I were to keep it inside a sun lounge for the summer? And then with all the windows open, with no central heating, all winter, alternating between foggy and icy days to get some good freeze-thaw action going? What then, I ask you?

  • How many people actually go out shopping for pizza and beer and finish hauling away a solid, galvanized steel, full-size table tennis table?

It makes you wonder, doesn't it?

  •  The real WTF is trying to hit the right ball when it's hailing during your all weather table tennis match.

When hail becomes indistinguishable from the ball, then you are already dead or wounded.

And how many problems do you have if you then think, "I know, I'll use regex"?

Then a ping-pong ball sized hail storm is the least of your problems.

Is that a ping-pong-ball-sized storm of hail, or a storm of ping-pong-ball-sized hailstones?

It's both.  It's a ping-pong-ball-sized storm of ping-pong-ball-sized hailstones.  Or, to put it more succinctly: a single ball of hail, the size of a ping pong ball.

  •  In any case, it's a lot of dashes (hyphen-minus), and we're still no closer to that regex.

    It's becoming a problem.

You shouldn't stand too close to a regex. You might be hit by a ping-pong ball or a hailstone of equal volume.

Well, you might get some warping out of it in the summer, but your winter plan is laughable in our climate; we don't have icy days or freezing weather here. A cold winter night is one where it gets down to 2-3°C. More usually it only goes down to around 5-10°C.

Yep, we don't have central heating. I don't know of any houses around here that do. I do have a reverse-cycle air-conditioner, but it is rarely used for heating.

    Do you have a filesystem?

That depends; is this an embedded device?

I, for one, welcome our new embedded ... oh wait wrong site.

Underside? Does that mean I'm on the overside?

According to people who care about the social scene, apparently so. Or at least the boring side.
