Trading Code

  • Just got this from my college's computer science mailing list (translated from Portuguese, grammatical errors included):

    Hi guys,

Has anybody got a rotating ad banner that I could borrow... in FLASH

I thank you in advance. in exchange I can offer you some code for a side menu in C#

And then when I told him that's the most bizarre email I ever got from that list - seriously, he's taken the "plz send me teh codez" programming style and added trading to it - he quickly replied:

    Long live OpenSource =)

Somehow that hurt me deeper than the first email.

  • Bartering updated for the 21st century!  Much more relevant than the old cows-and-chickens example.

What if you could find somebody that already has lots of codez and there was some kind of universal exchange medium you could use to "buy" the code you need?

I wouldn't say I have lots of codez but I'm happy to start the ball rolling...

What's a bubble sort written in Turbo Pascal worth?  It's in great condition and has only been used to sort integers.

I'll trade you for a C++ sorted list class. Only instantiated once! Great condition.

I'll even throw in 99 large ruined books, and a Firelance. GREAT DEAL!

If you have any virgin breakpoints you know I wanna hit them.

    99 ruined books.

That is like the shittiest deal ever.

  • So the only gramatical error was a lowercase word at the beginning of a sentence?

     alright..

100 Large ruined books. and 10 bent tin cans.

On the condition that I can say goodbye to them.

  • That firelance sounds like a good deal, but it degrades like fuck and it's pretty hard to repair. Unless I have some alien epoxy, of course.

How about 15 prewar books, and a firelance and an alienblaster?

Does it have an early escape if the list is already sorted?  I know that was standard on the newer models.  In keeping with the Borland theme, I can offer you a templated, random access, record file class for Turbo C++ 3.0.  It uses a variety of non-standard I/O functions and extensive abuse of void * pointers, but it serializes objects for you (Although I don't recommend using it with variable-size objects.  The results are... unpleasant.  Better to write your own conforming serialize function.).

  •  I knew I should have kept that code from school. I thought because it was half broken that noone would want it.

Maybe I could print it and try to sell it at a yard sale.

  • Well then, if anyone's interested, I have a neural network (perceptron) in C++ that's been aging like wine.

I can offer a pallet of "Broderbund Software Presents..." labels. They're unsued, but the rumor is that one of them got to third base with Carmen Sandiago.

  •  I'm especially interested in the word "borrow".  How do you borrow an ad banner?  Is he going to e-mail it back when he's finished with it?

Oh, man, Carmen was such a slut.  She was always getting around.  Where in the world hasn't she been?

That's sad and disgusting.  I loved Turbo C++ 3.0, but at some point it has to stop being a viable option ("Namespaces?  What the hell are those?").  I recall we had a single system with Digital Mars C++ (because TC++ didn't work with the Lego Mindstorms kits).  It was dark and mysterious, like that Peruvian exchange student.

I wondered if I was the only one who thought of our ol' pal SS after seeing "Long live OpenSource".  StudlyCaps is as evocative of him as ATL and loltastic dickery is of, well, you know.

Well, I don't really have any idea what that does as, once I had mastered the bubble sort, I cried a few salt tears then hung up my coding hat*.

Still, I'll take it.  Not knowing what something does should not be a barrier to buying something - I use this purchasing policy all the time with power tools.

      *A stetson since you ask

The code uses a void pointer to expose a footnote-interface between a comment and a tag. You didn't use one, and crashed CS. Thanks alot.

I am trying to write an assignment to expose a footnote-interface between a comment and a tag.  Can you send me your void pointer please?
