The über WTF in microsoft MSDN

  • While searching the MSDN on Google, suddenly sought this. Can you spot TRWTF?

    Clue: look at the URL

If you believe this is a fake, just do a Google Search:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=inurl:PHPSESSID+site:msdn.microsoft.com

  • To expand on my snark a little bit:

    1) MSDN's site does not add PHP session IDs to pages, if you navigate to it normally

    2) Some other buggy-ass site does, and links to MSDN with the PHP session ID attached to the link tag

    3) Google's picking up on that other site, and thus thinks the correct URL has the PHP session ID on it, when that is not in fact the case

    In conclusion, Community Server sucks.

I don't need to waffle through 3 other points just to get to this conclusion.

  • I just joined this thread to see how long it takes till someone comments on your use of a background image in Firefox.

He's drowning them with money. What a soulless capitalistic pig he is!

  • It's quite simple. Some years ago, a few engineers at Microsoft decided to rewrite MSDN in PHP as a joke. They went live with it on April 1, 2006. That day, their servers remained idle. When the realized the performance improvement, they just added a htaccess rule to redirect .aspx to a .php file. They've been running PHP for the past 4 years on MSDN and nobody's the wiser... Only due to the occasional Apache mis-configuration is this tidbit leaked (and you need to look for the clues to realize it)...

The rumor is also that Bing is powered by PHP, but they are too vein to acknowledge it publicly.

  • @dabean said:

It's a waste of perfectly good fuel for the furnace.

Plus, if we keep drowning them all, eventually there will be a baby we can't drown and he will grow up to take over the world with his mighty water-breathing powers.  He'll kill us all and raise a new master race of fish people!  WE'RE DOOMED!  DOOMED!

  • Analysis before scrolling past the image:

Let's see... the URL has a PHPSESSID for a .aspx file; Bing; the page is hideous and looks like it's missing a stylesheet; those expandable boxes probably don't function without Javascript; there doesn't appear to be much actual information besides what a dictionary is; the status bar has white text on a gray background; Community Server.

    Any others I missed?

Truth be told, this was the first thing on my mind when observing the thread.

"Spot the WTF? That Firefox Theme! Ha!"

Well, MS has its own PHP compiler publicly available.

I was going to post something witty but, never mind.

    1) You use Windows XP (If not worse).
    2) Your terrible taste in OSes extends to Firefox themes. Seriously - a drowning baby?
    3) You think a rogue querystring you picked up from Google is in any way unusual or interesting.

WTF? It takes all sorts, and that baby isn't drowning. He exists over 26 million times!

  • @Weng said:

I still use XP at home. It's stable and fast.*

My habit is to pay for OSs, and I'm not planning on upgrading to 7 yet. Dunno why really. Something about change & winning teams etc.

Commonly, my computer upgrades have been driven by advances in games. I couldn;t play GTA:SA, so I bought a new computer. Same for Fallout 3. At some point, I will want to play a game that requires DX10, and then I will upgrade.

*) if your XP machine is crashy and slow, then you are at fault. Seriously. Stop fucking up your computer.

Are you using PRM, by any chance?  We found it could do horrible, horrible things to our otherwise high-priority processes.

  • Nirvana sucks babies.

MSDN got a little more awful.

  • And we've successfully scared ZaM off.

Well, hopefully he leaves us a little wiser about HTTP URL params.

    Just plain vanilla 3 here.

I'm not sure if I'll move on to expansion packs when I'm done. There's a reasonable chance Hallf-Life EP3 will be out by then (only two years late!).

  • @dhromed said:

    Serial monogameist

Hahaha, lose yourself one addiction at a time.

You should've finished 3 by now, though. It's a short game, unless you want everything. And completing everything in FO3 is borderline Asperger's. Like the guy who's been playing with marbles for 8 hours a day, for the past 65 years?

  •  TRWTF is Firefox Personas.

  • @badcaseofspace said:

    It's a short game

No, a short game would be how my coworker finished it: play it like a strict FPS, when in doubt: shoot, and sprint from quest to quest and be done in three afternoons and then never play it again. There's a waste of money!

I'm not saying I want everything, but I do want a whole damn lot.

Ok maybe I do want everything.

  • It's actually not helping that after modding it with GreenWorld and Fellout Weather, the entire game looks almost exactly like the view from my window on a summer day (like today), except my world is not quite as bombed up. If I took LSD, I would totally see deathclaws and radscorpions walking the streets.

  • @dhromed said:

Ok maybe I do want everything.
I recently picked the game back up again after months without playing it.  Of course, I didn't realize until I was about 6 hours in (having finally bothered to do The Pitt), that I was playing off a bad autosave from when I had murdered everyone in Megaton in a fit of boredom.  So now I've made it my goal to murder everyone throughout the Capital Wasteland.  Oh, there will be fresh water.  But who will be left to drink it?

  • I have a friend who collected all 500 agility orbs and all 300 hidden orbs in Crackdown. I wasted no time in telling him he was a complete loser.

If Xbox Live achievement points matched effort level, that one would be worth about 10,000.

I collected enough to get to 4 stars, but that was mostly because leaping from rooftop to rooftop was my preferred way to get around the city.  In a game full of guns and cars, I did most of my work by climbing and kicking the shit out of things.

The best part of that game was the wonky vehicle physics. The reason collecting orbs is stupid is that you can't do it in the agency cars. If he'd been driving those couple weeks instead of jumping around, I would have had more respect... slightly.

Anyway, the best way to kill guys was rocket launchers. That one that could fire 5 rockets in 5 seconds was pretty much the only weapon you ever needed.

BTW, Crackdown 2 is coming out in like a month! SOOOO excited.

  • While on the subject of games, y'all know today's the last day you can get Valve's Portal for free, dontcha?

(don't ask me about what strings are attached. I had Orange Box offered to me)

I'm pretty sure illiterate Iranians living in caves know that by this point.

Oh well I guess I better develop an intense hatred for Microsoft (I mean Micro$oft) then, and also laugh that they are using a technology that they didn't originate! Ha ha ha! Like HTTP and TCP/IP! Ha ha ha! Stupid M$!

I've been playing Portal: Prelude, which I've only heard about after this "free Portal" news. It's been a real challenge in a few spots.
