Do you believe in $X? Yes, or yes?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    <img src="http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/PaulJHerring/district422.png" title="The Republican Party of Minnesota Senate District 42 fuck up a poll/>

Background: Originally the poll was a yes/no, but a somewhat well known detractor of internet polls advertised it, and for some reason the poll went the opposite way of what the askers wanted.
Initially it read, and before the post linked to got published, had votes as:

President Obama called the new Arizona bill banning illegal immigration "misguided". Do you agree?

    Sí, señor! 22%
    No Way, José! 77%

After some fucking around with the poll, they've appeared to give up all pretense of making it a fair vote.:
So what did they do? Multiple resets of the poll, throwing out all of the votes — for a while, they were resetting it every 10 minutes. Attempts to lock the poll: they'd let votes accumulate for a few minutes from a fresh start, and as soon as their side showed a slight edge, freeze it there (some of the readers here discovered an alternate path to the polling service and worked their way around it). Rewriting the answers, first to remove the stereotypical language, then to reverse the sense of the answers (we were not fooled), and now…and now, [screengrab above]

Feel free to ignore the silliness of the behaviour and go straight to discussing the content of the poll if you wish.... I know what you lot are like.

But while I may support enforcement of existing law, I also believe in challenging and testing the constitutionality and "justice" of the Law.  Not all Laws are Just or Constitutional, and those laws should be challenged and either revised or removed.  Until such a law is ENFORCED, it can't really be tested.

The most misleading poll I ever saw was, "do you believe there should be laws passed against hate crimes?"

The "correct" answer is no: there's already laws banning the crimes themselves, the person's race shouldn't be a factor.

But, as phrased, there's no way to answer it without looking like a racist.

  • There are quite a few laws on the books recently whose only purpose is to gaurantee that the accused can be convicted of SOMETHING.
Oh, not enough evidence for Assault?  Ok, we'll charge them with a hate crime.
And there are more than a few laws whose only real purpose is to fill the coffers.  If it's not enough of a crime to warrent jail time, it shouldn't be against the law.  If a crime gives a CHOICE of a fine or jail time, then it's economically discriminatory.

I can see your point with the Hate crimes though.  But what about X on X crimes, as opposed to X on Y crimes.  Would they only be hate crimes if the individual was a self hating X?

  • @Medezark said:

You know, I started wondering about that awhile ago.  It leads to a lot of questions about the intent of punishment and the costs to society.  For example, a person who makes a lot of money legitimately generates more value for society than someone who makes less.  You end up with the pseudo-paradox of the punishment hurting society more than the crime.  Of course, you could say that not punishing the person means they won't learn their lesson, but if you've ever known ex-convicts it's pretty obvious that the lesson most learn is simply how to not get caught.

Bah.  At this point, I favor seeding the state borders of AZ with copious landmines and then ceding it to Mexico.  Wait, that Linux furry was from New Mexico, right?  Let's include NM in that, too.

Ah, the old seed/cede strategy.  It didn't work for the French during the Treaty of Utrecht, it didn't work for the Greeks with the Peace of Antalcidas, and it won't work here.  For one, the odds are slim that we could place enough mines to successfully wipe out all the Mexicans.  For another, giving Mexico more land will just encourage them, and they already have an inflated sense of self-worth due to the success of Taco Bell.

No, the best strategy is always the simplest.  In this case, that consists of bulldozing the state, inhabitants and all, into the Grand Canyon.  Then we can begin the process of building a massive, state-wide subdevelopment of McMansions to ease white flight.  As for immigrants, all those new upper middle class WASPs will need yardwork and cleaning done.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.  The Civil War has taught you nothing: if you keep them as slaves they will eventually use their sneaky ethnic powers to free themselves.  Before you know it, they're buying up all of the White Man's gold to make themselves false teeth and taking all the white women with the largest butts for their own perverse uses, leaving none for the low-rent Internet porn we white men live for.

I say, if they want to steal our jobs, we go ahead and let them.  We can let them take all of the most tedious, soul-crushing cubicle jobs.  Meanwhile, we can spend all day pimping out our cars, drinking beer from paper sacks and smoking the reefers.  When they finally realized they got boned, it'll be too late.

Where's that Communist Mexican guy at?  Fat-something or something-dog?  We can run the plan by him and see if it has legs.

Reminds me of this manga panel I found on the interwebs. Don't have it handy, but it was a tv show contest:

Passing a law is easy, enforcement is hard.

Besides I see the need for this law more clearly now.  The last time a group of disenfranchised people escpaed into the desert they ended up controlling entertainment, finance and jewelry.

As a former bus driver, I support this whole-heartedly. Use of mini nukes is optional, but encouraged.

Whoa there, cowboy.  Who said anything about slavery?  I proposed widescale murder; destruction of every structure in the state; turning one of the country's most famous natural monuments into a landfill; environmental ruination; construction of a massive, soulless cookie cutter suburban sprawl of epic proportions; organization of a state free from minorities or the lower classes; and the exploitation of an uneducated group to perform manual labor for subpoverty wages.  But I never suggested slavery.

But now that I think about it, my solution has one major flaw: we are surrendering our existing suburbs to the same people who ruined our beautiful cities like Baltimore or Detroit.  Now I'm thinking a better solution may be to push all the undesirables into Arizona, like Trail of Tears 2.0.  Look at how well that worked out for the Indians: they've got their own casinos now!  Then we can turn Arizona into a penal colony.  If we're lucky it'll turn out like Australia: occasionally producing a Crocodile Dundee movie or catchy Men at Work tune, but otherwise completely forgettable.

Unless I can enjoy a little paint-huffing, I'm not interested.  But what your suggesting could very well ruin this country: we may destroy so many brain cells we begin to find soccer interesting.  That is a future that terrifies me to my very core.@morbiuswilters said:

It's already against the law for foreign nationals to bypass the immigration system and move here illicitly (hence why it is called "illegal immigration").  It's also been Federal law for half a century that legal aliens must carry their immigration documentation at all times and that they may be asked for it by Federal officers.  This simply mandates it at the state level, permitting state law enforcement the legal standing to enforce existing Federal statute.

In other words, it's Fascism, plain and simple.   Just like requiring that people who are driving a car be able to produce a valid driver's license; or like other state laws that mirror Federal statute, like drug and anti-terrorism laws; or like these goddamn oppressive, racist, bloodflow-constricting pants.

That last part kind of sounds like slavery, which I am wary of.  Not because I oppose slavery, but because they might find a way to escape.  However, if we're paying them then it's technically not slavery and they'll probably believe they are free, so there's significantly less chance they will free themselves for real.
