Seeking a sentence generator... do you know a good one ?

  •  Hi guys,

While plotting with my fellow muslim communist child-rapists in the shadows of the ninth circle of Hell (oddly named "France"), I wondered if there was some good sentence generator in english. I've made this search for french sentences generators, but there's no good one (mine apart, of course). Heard of one I could test ?

  •  We do have a good foul-language-generator that doubles as a Japanese Lorem Ipsum generator, but I am too lazy to search for the link.

  • To be more precise, the type I seek is one which can generate random, grammaticaly correct, english sentences. Any other option is welcome, but that's the main part.

I've seen some after googling a bit but none really interesting so far this point.

This one uses a neural network

  •  My guessing is that sentence generating is hard, and there's precious little that does it.

Perhaps you could state your purpose, and then we might come up with a solution to fit your needs, rather than try to give you what you ask for.

You might just as well crawl wikipedia and grab random sentences from pages, avoiding the "generation" step altogether.

That's my tactic (though manually) for random content, because I find it superior to unreadable Lorem Ipsum.

Totally sane demand. I want to compare mine to the existant ones, if there are any known references in that kind of things, to see if my little off-time toy is something correct or just a little off-time toy.

Yes I've read it already, a very good TDWTF story. I'd love to peek at the code generating that, I admit...

    Lookup Markov Chains.

Building grammatically-correct sentences using Markov chains is extremely difficult for anything other than the simplest sentences.

  •  Adidtionally, investigate the works of Noam Chomsky.

  • You could start searching here: http://userpages.uni-koblenz.de/~harbusch/pg.html. It's a set of articles on sentence generation from a psycholinguistic point of view (I won't bother you with the details, but coordination and elipsis are nearly impossible in the Chomskyan frameworks, and they have been solved very neatly in this one). The source code is available under certain conditions. You can also use the articles as a starting point for finding other implementations.

You could also start at http://www.cs.cofc.edu/~manaris/ai-education-repository/nlp-tools.html, or google for "natural language generator".

  • Thanks for the links, folks. I'll try to understand and use it well.

Speaking of the simplest (or stupidest) sentences, I can't believe we've neglected to mention Xyro's Swampy-speak generator.

I also can't believe that I've been away for something like a month and the Swampy thread is still going.

  • I really like this one:

    http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/

SCIgen - An Automatic CS Paper Generator

It generates a full scientific paper that sounds like great buzzword-bingo without any sense at all. Short Example:

The exploration of Smalltalk has harnessed RPCs, and current trends suggest that the emulation of XML will soon emerge. The effect on e-voting technology of this outcome has been considered compelling. After years of technical research into the UNIVAC computer, we prove the development of wide-area networks, which embodies the unfortunate principles of algorithms. Contrarily, massive multiplayer online role-playing games alone can fulfill the need for scalable models. We skip a more thorough discussion for now.

    Always glad to help.
