Firewall Rules - they're everywhere!

  • Remember the old joke about "What's the difference between a used care salesperson and an I.T. professional? The salesperson can actually drive a car...." ? Well I would like to present an actual email I received in it's entirety (baring removal of product specific keywords). It's from the person meant to be developing the solution to someone in my support team.

We are getting a problem looking at the schedule log file

    http://localhost:9999/XXX/scheduler/log.html

Is there a firewall rule for this?

  •  I'm not sure I understand.  You can have firewall rules for local interfaces.  Or is the WTF that the URL shouldn't be localhost to begin with?

     Start -> Run -> notepad "c:\htdocs\XXX\scheduler\log.htm"

(Or whatever file log.htm / writes to)

     Sidenote:  Happy 5000th post, morbius.

Since some decades there is this new thing called Access Control List.  Even Microsoft supports them for quite a while now...

I guess that makes sense if it's static HTML.  I guess I was assuming this was something more dynamic, but that's probably a bad assumption to make.  Still, I'd use a browser for viewing HTML, not Notepad.

Goddamnit, I had intended to create a thread, but when I noticed, you were still like 2 days of posts off and I forgot.

The only thing worse than a dev not having read access to the docroot on his own machine is a dev that doesn't know how to check if he has read access to the docroot on his own machine.

I'm not sure I'd trust that dev with anything more powerful than Notepad.  And even then, only if I used some Microsoft Powertoy to remove all the sharp corners and choking hazards.

If it isn't static, I suppose at least they could open the page and see where the dynamic code is pulling the log data from.

If you want to feel good about it, realize that it's a significant contribution to the forum and it's community. Otherwise, you can realize that 5000 posts at (let's average) 50 words per is the same word-count as at least two or three good sized novels. You could have written a triology instead!

I'd say he can still write the trilogy. Just paste all those posts togethers and you might get a masterpiece of fiction novell with high contents of social and pollitical context. You might see some Kurt Voneghut meets P. J. O'Rourke meets Charles Bukowski meets Dr. Seuss meets [Insert cheesy gay romantic novel author] meets Dear Abby meets a crack addict detoxing on a cell with a pen up his urethra.

That would be true, if only Alex hadn't purged the tags. Now it'd just be fucked up and incoherent, like a James Joyce novel with more homoeroticism.  I'm thinking Ulysses meets Twilight.

Let's be fair, it would still be pretty fucked-up and incoherent even with the tags.

No good.  This would mean tattooing the GPL onto your dick, and you'd run out of room two words into the preamble.

On the other hand, the first two words of the preamble are "The GNU", which is not the weirdest thing anyone's ever named his wang.

Just be sure not to use ClearType on your wang if you put it in portrait mode; he hates that.

    Myriad? Pshaw!

Tell people you used Blackoak and didn't need 2pt. That's how you impress font nerds. Not to mention the excellent double entendre of the font name.

I can't play it for a while until I order that new cooler for my videocard because I fucked up the thermal paste for my current one. All I can play before it starts to make more noise than the vacuum cleaner is 2D stuff like Osmos — which is pretty goddamn good, actually, but only when  you've come home at 3am from a gezellige night of drinking —.

He doesn't have to distribute it with his-- ah-- offering. He just has to make sure they can get his source.  That should be easy enough to do either peer-to-peer, or through a public server.

Just be careful, Morbius.  Someone might not like how you're handling your dick, and will try to fork it.

  • @Lorne Kates said:

Sure he does; the GPL requires a copy of the license be distributed with every copy of the program.

I think he'd find it quite difficult to distribute his dick without including the source code.  Hell, it even outputs parts of the source from time to time, usually when in close proximity to btk's face.

You can start by taking a picture and posting it on Wikipedia and releasing it under the Creative Commons license. You wouldn't be the first, but it's an amusing way of pseudo releasing your dick under GPL.

    Then get the tattoo.

TRWTF is that there's not really any point in licensing something for sharing and distribution when nobody is ever going to want to even touch it, let alone 'share' or 'distribute' it...

I think his strategy is to make it more appealing by releasing under the GPL.  That way all the FOSStards will flock to it, because they'll delude themselves into believing it's better than the wang of a CONVICTED MONOPOLIST.

Actually, it's because I don't want convicted monpoli$t$ taking part of my penis, such as my silky-smooth foreskin, adding it to pieces of other penises, selling it for profit$ and preventing end-users from chopping the silky-smooth foreskin off their new purchase and using it to make a new pair of eyelids for their collie.

As we used to say on The Filthy Truth, "UN-SUB-FUCKING-SCRIBE".
