You're right, having to enter a password is an issue.

  • @WebEx email I got said:

You may be prompted to enter the meeting password (<password removed>).  This is a known issue and will be resolved soon.

Now, I know what they meant, but I had to do a double take on it.

  • WebEx is the bane of my existance. As it's been updated, it's actually gotten worse. The "xyz is controlling your desktop" continually appears when you are controlling someone's desktop, and prevents you from clicking. *sigh*.

    WebEx is full of WTFs.

Have FedEx started branching out? Never heard of them. (Google tells me a lot, but nothing I've seen before. Cisco(according to .co.uk, but not .com strangely)? Ouch.)

I guess it's owned by cisco, but I don't know how long.  I think Cisco bought them a couple of years ago.  WebEx does a lot of things, but their bread and butter is screen sharing.  Compared to what we had before (sametime meetings and netmeeting), it's a Godsend.  It's a lot more slick than either of those other two.

My favorite is how it is completely oblivious to the existence of more than one computer monitor. I don't know how many dozens of times I've had this exchange:

"Can you see my window?" "No." "Well, it's open, it should be there..." "Try dragging it to the other monitor." "Ok." "Now it works."

I mean, seriously, it's 2010. Do office computers without multiple monitors even exist anymore?

Absolutely.  You think your average company gives a shit about their paper pushers enough to give them dual monitors? Why would they even need more than one; it would just mean two screens worth of dicking around on Facebook that have to be Alt-Tab'd over to a generic Excel spreadsheet every time the boss walks by.

One to play hardcore, deep-dicking porn on, one to fuck around on Facebook (or TDWTF) on.

Just two?  What screen do you use to play Doom 3, visit myspace, chatroulette, and omegle on?

and I once thought you were a hard worker!

If I ever get more than 2 monitors, the extras will just be used to play increasingly-depraved German porn on.

  •  I have 1 1600*1200 monitor in portrait orientation.

Ok whatever. Point is, it's still unacceptable to not support multiple monitors in 2010. (If they at least acknowledged the bug somewhere in the program, even that would be helpful. They basically wrote it as if having more than one monitor is unimaginable.)

Remind me to never, ever, under any circumstances, look at Morb's sixth monitor...

Meh.  The real terror comes when he gets a wall of monitors, each showing unredeemably disgusting porn, and he carefully selects these videos such that, when viewed from a distance, the wall of monitors becomes a massive mural depicting yet another scene, this one so utterly revolting that you cannot look away.  Everything else in the world ceases to matter, until, inevitably, you die watching it.

Now if only we could get desk manufacturers to agree and build some actual load bearing support in.

... Then again, my 2x 24" and 2x 22" CRTs are a hell of a lot heavier than your newfangled LCDs.

You, sir,— provided I gauge your situation correctly from posts you have made in the past —appear to have absolutely no reason not to replace those with a set of fine LCDs.

The only reason I haven't replaced mine yet is because it's not yet degraded to the point where I say "well fuck" and buy myself a nice S-IPS.

  • So very true. In our company only designers got second monitor. I saw a workplace of most other people here, and to give them another monitor would mean to give them another table.

That would take a hell of a desk to support. Then again, I've seen a desk crack under the weight of just a computer, without monitors, so I kind of agree

Here at my lovely company, everyone outside of IT (except management) has a single beige CRT from the 90's, running at 800x600.  Newly-hired devs get a 15" LCD to plug into the sadly under-powered Latitude D620 laptops they make us use.  Only a few of us have multiple screens, and we had to throw bitch fits to get them. :(

Yeah, it's a financial institution.  Insurance specifically.  While the WTFs here are legion, the money is great.  My plan is to stay long enough to pay off my sizeable student loans.  I came to this job as a larval programmer straight out of college.  I've definitely learned a lot since I got here; I just hope I haven't been corrupted by the aforementioned WTFs.

If you're working with something modern, Java or C#, you should be ok. If you're working with MUMPS or COBOL, then your career may already be dead!! Nah... just kidding. But you need to move to a .com, stat. Nobody ever changed the world working at an insurance company.

  •  I'm on a team of 30 C# devs, surrounded by 80 or so COBOL-speaking mainframers.  I've been working on a couple of iPhone apps for the company for the last six months.  Hopefully the objective-c experience has a decent return-on-resume.

You're assuming start-ups make a difference.  The only .coms that changed the world have "teen", "jizz" or "schoolgirls" in the name.

No I'm not. I'm just saying that:

    1) Insurance programmers have zero chance of making a difference

    2) At least at a .com, you have a foozball table and Xbox 360 while failing to make a difference

  • @blakeyrat said:

They might be able to subtly manipulate claims data to financially destroy or even kill a random person, as part of a sick game.  That's making a difference in the world, leaving your indelible fingerprint on society in the form of broken lives.  Sort of like a Nazi, but without the gay mustache or stupid BDSM uniform.

True.  It's kind of like moving back in with your parents at the age of 30, with the investors being your stressed-out Dad who is afraid he'll never be able to afford to retire, and with "For the last time, put down the bong and go mow the goddamn lawn!" being "Build a scalable, service-oriented Web 2.0 platform for social media."
