Isn't it a real
that highway billboards are a thing? Something that says, "Hey, we know you're driving at 100+kph, but if you could shift your attention over here for a bit that would be great. Oh, and also here's some tiny disclaimer text that even the guy that glued this thing on here can't read, so you'd better squint real hard" seems really dumb.Am I alone on this?

And then I realized that's basically just what billboards are.

And now we have the ones that are giant monitors and change every couple seconds (damn, I wanted to see what that said but it changed before I could get close enough). Many of which are far too bright at night.

Public safety can go fuck itself. There are PROFITS to be made. If someone is going to get themselves killed looking at the sign then YOU KNOW YOUR SIGN IS BEING LOOKED AT! Your advertising dollars are being well spent. That fucker probably wasn't going to buy your product anyways.

Then there's the utter bullshit of massive LED screens being put in residential neighbourhoods. Near me (thankfully a city away, but still near me) there's this shitfucker:

Cars included for scale. It's hard to tell from the daytime picture, but that fucker runs about 1,000,000,000,000 candles. If I have to drive near that area at night, I need to put the sunvisor down to block it out or I literally can't see anything else. And it certainly isn't due to bribery or anything like that. No, not at all. I mean, despite the bylaws that explicitly forbid:
- electronic signs over 5 square meters
- ANY electronic signs in the "daylight triangle" (the inner angel of an street intersection)
- ANY electronic signs that involve flashing, moving, pulsation, change of color
- ANY electronic signs that impede driver vision
- ANY ground sign (sign directly attached to ground, or attached to ground by support structure) greater than 2.4m (~7') within 15m (~45') of an intersection
- It advertises 3rd party products, and you are only allowed a sign 4.6m square to do that and it can only be 4.5 m tall
Even certain "provisions" for other signs still has these restrictions:
- Must display the address on the sign face (nope)
- Must be at least 15 seconds between sign switches (I'm pretty sure no)
- An allowance if the mall is located on a 1+ hectare area, which is borderline for this one-- but only gives them 20msqr sign
So basically, this sign violates nearly every bylaw the city has for electronic signs. But SOMEHOW it was allowed to be put up, and never taken down. There certainly isn't bribery involved, NOT AT ALL.

there's a building right across the street near my campus that does the same thing. It's annoyingly bright now, but that's only because people complained and managed to get them to turn the brightness down at night. before, it was eye-searing at dark -- I mean it was physically painful to look at it.
of course, because this is a university campus, the management companies are all sleazy scumbags who just want to take advantage of kids here so they don't really give a shit.

Not a route I can ever remember using. (Maybe when I was a baby but who cares about that?) I've been driven under it a few times (taking a taxi from Heathrow to a collaborator's place in Hayes) but never been on that stretch of motorway itself. In any case, I've not seen anything like it on the equivalently dense sections of the M60 round Manchester, the M62 south of Leeds or the M42 round Birmingham. All three carry more than sufficient traffic to justify putting up fancy ads (and during rush hour, there wouldn't be much distraction as traffic speeds drop very low), so I'm guessing there's some regulation actively preventing it.

I got stuck in the London rush hour traffic once when visiting friends, having to get from Heathrow to Stevenage in the late afternoon. It was an interesting experience. Can't remember any annoying ads, though. I also remember being driven at holy-fuck-are-you-kidding-me speeds on the M1 (~220km/h) where I decided I would avoid my friend's boyfriend as a driver ever again.
As far as roadside advertisements go over here, there are some rules for roadside signage that allows some. Most of them comes as banners mounted on the sides of barns visible from the road, or on old trailers that's put at strategic places. I think there's a ban on signs within a certain distance from the road, which means most of them end up on the edge of the forest. Then there's the homemade signs pointing towards garage sales (mostly), which are everywhere during the summer months where people try to sell off all their old crap to passerbys.
