Here are some example CMV files you can try:
Try converting
dwarf_fortress.cmv
. It has sound effects and music!
-
You know what would be awesome? If it streamed it while converting so I wouldn't have to download and wat for iti.
-
@Tsaukpaetra unfortunately, that's impossible with MP4 files.
If you just want to view the files, I have cmvjs as well:

Not impossible, just wildly impractical for live encoding I think. Look up HLS and DASH.

VLC does it.

@ben_lubar Let me know when it renders a game into photo-realistic 3d graphics-- adds dynamic camera angles like a movie-- edits it down into a watchable length-- adds voice narration with Morgan Freeman (generated, of course)-- uses an AI to focus on & showcase the really interesting / plot important / insane DF stuff-- then posts it to YouTube.
March of the Dorfs.
-
You should add upload via URL.

Unfortunately my phone can't convert mp4 to gif.
Edit: besides, that just means your browser can't play mp4 at all, whereas mine can, but not whatever gems toy spits out.
-

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
Edit: basically, just make a custom build of ffmpeg.js that has support for the gif encoder.

@ben_lubar how about webm container with the VP9 codec and
-pix_fmt yuv420p
?

Don't look at me. Those videos play perfectly fine on my computer.
-
@pie_flavor I was remembering how you kept accusing my VP9 encoded webm videos of looking like rainbow sherbet until I added the
-pix_fmt yuv420p
option. At least, I'm pretty sure that's the option I used.
-
@anotherusername
-pix_fmt yuv420p
means to basically split the image into Y(black/white), U(blue-ness), and V(red-ness):and then because it's yuv420 and not yuv444, discard ¾ of the U and V data.
Which would look fucking awful for pixel graphics.
-
@ben_lubar said in You can now convert Dwarf Fortress videos to REAL VIDEOS FOR PEOPLE on this webpage:

If you say so.
ffmpeg -i dwarf_fortress.mp4 -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 31 -b:v 0 -acodec libvorbis -b:a 128k dwarf_fortress.webm
For just under 22% of the size, I can't see much of a difference. And this one plays in my browser.
(I think Edge wouldn't be able to play it, but that's a feature.)

Mine, apparently.

Well, first of all, none of the 2x2 pixel areas have two distinct colors where neither color is pure black or pure white in that one.

.But considering that I really couldn't tell the difference with the first one... I dunno what it gains from the almost 50% larger filesize.

Fine, you win. Here's an MP4 with
yuv420p
and-crf 31
that should work in all browsers (including IE and Safari):

@ben_lubar ... but why? Will IE and Safari not play the WebM video that I posted?

Nuh uh! One says "Error: Unsupported video type or invalid path" the other says "This type of video file isn't supported"
Totally different!

@tsaukpaetra If something doesn't work on IE, it's a safe bet it doesn't work on Edge either. Because Edge is IE with a coat of paint. And by that I mean it's been painted shut.

False. I have an app I've written in Vue.JS that works perfectly fine in Edge, but fails to load in IE. In fact, just so that I can "support" IE11, I've had to add three sections of javascript and alter the way I write anonymous functions just so that it stops barfing.

You're right, I should just let it render into an incomprehensible dump just because I want to bash on IE. Way to lose customers, yo.
-
@tsaukpaetra Who the hell still uses IE?
