  • From wsj.com:

  • But at least the arrows are green and "up"?  There's no "unchanged" icon?  WTF right there.

  • The prices are at 0.00, and rising. This means that not a long time ago in the past the prices were negative. I hope you bought a few shares!

  •  don't be afraid it's just a few years foresighed ;-)

Which is why I bought those companies; I was actually paid to do it.

Obviously they're using one's complement for the binary representation of their variables.  The difference is positive zero, not negative zero.

This is far more clever than anything I expected this thread to generate.

It's the rapture alright!  I just saw Swampy ascending bodily to heaven in a cloud of glorious light!

Er, erudite rather than clever. Clever would be realising that there's no 'unchanged' icon because there is an infinitesimal likelihood that it would ever be appropriate, and it would never be needed. Stock markets closing on the same figure two days running is very unlikely because the last two digits are pretty much random, but even if they did, it's not very important that a news site displays a 'no change' icon.

The implication that he was right and we should have believed in him all along was meant to be more frightening than that...

The real reason there is no "unchanged" is because stock news organizations like to show the market advancing.  Ratings are much higher on up days because people like watching themselves make money, and tend to ignore it or tune it out on down days.  Hence, the more green they show, the more hits they will likely get.

BTW, individual stocks go "unchanged" pretty often in the stock market.

Wait, so it's not the ones complement thing?
