Craters Pupdate III - Sprung Again

  • Java Dev

Seems Microsoft can't figure good names for their feature updates, so let's release the third Creators Update, because why not?

What new exciting features do we get?

    • Timelines - Lets Cortana nag you about all your unfinished work, across all your devices!
    • Near Share - Annoy people around you by sharing links to all the classics: Goatse, Lemonparty, Tubgirl etc.
    • Fonts - Have an improved font settings control panel. And buy all of the fonts in the Microsoft Store while you're at it!
    • UI improvements - You can now see version numbers for UWP apps! And your friends can send you animated emojis! And additional languages are now downloaded through the Microsoft Store!
    • DPI scaling fix - We fixed apps looking blurry when DPI scaling isn't set to 100%. Well, in some cases. It may or may not work. Especially not if you're using multiple monitors, where it may not work at all.
    • Quiet Hours - Be more productive by setting times when you don't want to be disturbed. And it will also activate automatically when you're playing fullscreen games, as nothing says productive more than playing games!
    • Mute tab - You can now mute a tab in Edge playing audio with a simple click. No, we totally didn't steal this from Firefox, promise!
    • Diagnostic data viewer - You can now easily see what data we collect to spy on youimprove Windows. I hope you have a programmer friend who can decode what it actually means!
    • en-us exclusive features - I hope you're running your Windows in this language, because we got shitloads of features only working in it! What, you don't have en-us Windows? Well... You may or may not get those features by release. Probably not.

Hopefully there will be no more Creators Update now, as they wont be able to reuse Fall Creators Update this autumn. But what could they name their next update trilogy? Hmm...

  • Considered Harmful

Windows Update Improvements: You can now limit the download bandwidth that is used in foreground downloads. Foreground downloads take place when you interactively start a download, for example – you click on “Check for updates” or start downloading an App from Windows Store.

Hey, @ben_lubar, they're talking to you on this one.

  • Considered Harmful

    Security questions for local accounts:

God. Wish-it-was-two-factor on local accounts? :wtf: Also, they can't HTML properly; the image was another bullet point of its own.

You can set the schedule that works for you so that Quiet Hours are always on when you want them. Go to Settings > Quiet Hours to configure your schedule.

I will bet you it's a maximum of nine hours and only one contiguous period.

    Making your folders more discoverable:

Fucking finally. This was in Windows 7, was it not?

one thing we’ve heard from you is how it can be frustrating to have started writing a response into a notification (such as one from Skype), only to have the response disappear if you didn’t submit it before the notification went away.

I have now found yet another way Skype sucks. How did this become a behavior in the first place? Why do your notifications disappear even after you've started typing in their text boxes? This is not the correct way you fix this, guys.

Chinese (Simplified) previous and new all apps list sections

*squints* Unless I'm missing something, you have solved the issue of hieroglyphics cramming by removing all the hieroglyphs. Whose idea was it to have the Chinese-language files searchable only with Latin characters? At least they kept some of the Japanese cuneiform, but unless there's something about the language I'm missing, there are in fact app names which start with those letters you removed.

    Improving your update experience:

Again, fucking finally. I will now amazingly enough be able to know whether my computer will update when I push the power button. I still can't say 'fuck you, just turn off normally', but it's a start.

    Autofill cards on web forms

No, we totally didn't steal this from Chrome, promise!

Offline web sites and push notifications

Geez, Chrome's had that for how long? Get your shit together.

    Form Fill for Address fields

And it's had that for even longer. Like, a really long time. Before Edge existed. This should have been in build #1.

    Evolving the Microsoft Yahei Font

Why are there multiple fonts? Why not just have one big Windows System Font that you use to display all your languages?

Here’s a sample of the updated font – the blue is the new version, the grey is an outline of the previous font:

    *looks around* Where'd it go?

    Introducing the Embedded Handwriting Panel

Okay, this is actually cool. XAML just keeps getting better.

This flight includes new and updated emoji data for over 150 languages

Note: The Emoji Panel is currently only available when the en-us keyboard is active.

    💯

We’ve updated the full touch keyboard so that you can now use keyboard shortcuts that contain 3 keys

    YOU DIDN'T HAVE THIS BEFORE????

[a whole ton of blather about Cortana]

Can you play music on SoundCloud? No? How about YouTube? No? Well, then looks like I don't give a shit yet; maybe next update.

Windows Command line Toolchain includes bsdtar (tar) and curl

Paging @ben_lubar again. Looks like Powershell's curl command will actually be curl now.

On the whole, though, I think I like this update.

Time to rerun update hiding tool...

    Probably.

But as a workaround you can remote-desktop into your own machine and run remote desktop in fullscreen. 🛒

Was it in FireFox or Chrome first? I know for a long time you had to manually enable a flag in chrome://flags to be able to mute tabs with the existing speaker icon.

  • My favorite bit in the upcoming Pupdate is the Atari 2600 Haunted House-style edge glow that follows your cursor around UWP applications to show you what things might be clickable. Are you sure we needed to go to a no edges, two color style, Microsoft?

only if you prefer to save space

    Apparently you don't 🤷🏼♂

  • @timebandit Clearly they do. Just look at how much of it they saved between those words!

    More like it

  • Meanwhile, my work laptop is still trying unsuccessfully to install the Fall update.

  • Sets + Timeline can do some pretty interesting stuff at least. I mean, It's not like anyone actually uses windows+tab right now, and this change doesn't seem to mess that up.

Sets aren't in this Pupdate. Something to look forward to (turning off or ignoring) in the Autumn Creators Pupdate!

  • @parody Ah. I've been using them occasionally in the preview, and while they don't really work quite right, I feel like it's a good step forward.

Like if I want to look to see if I have any updates I need to install, I probably also want to see the store, so I can make sure my apps are updated too.

Being able to automatically open both, because that's my workflow, is kind of cool.

The original touch keyboard didn't have up and down arrow keys, much less modifier keys that actually sent keystrokes they represented.

Except doing so locks your screen, so you can't do that and actually use the computer.

I never got them before they announced they were resetting people for release builds.

That particular one isn't something I'd do. Sets in general is a feature I don't see myself using (I like having my application windows separate) but I'll see when they get around to letting more people use it.

Yeah, if you needed to do anything fancy you needed the On-Screen Keyboard (instead of the Touch Keyboard).

Sure they can. Fall Creators Update II, which is Creators Update IV. :D

So Creators Update V will be a Japan exclusive, with Creators Update VI getting a release as Fall Creators Update III? And neither coming to Europe until after Creators Update VII ends up a massive success all over the world?

@atazhaia Yeah, that sounds about right.

I love the phrasing they used in this tool.

Shh, just let the pendulum slowly swing back. They'll add borders and shadows again in some update soon.

Hey, @ben_lubar, they're talking to you on this one.

Cute. What about background downloads though? We recently plugged in 8 computers at the office that have been offline for a fair while. They promptly all started downloading updates and broke our internet. We had to disconnect all but one and ensure only one PC is downloading at a time (there is, of course, no pause button). Mind you this is Australia so that's not exactly hard to do - think @ben_lubar but on a country scale (we're on an extremely expensive 60 Mbps connection).

    You're the Real :wtf:

You're supposed to keep them online all the time.

How else can Microsoft collect data for the NSA usage data to improve user experience ? 🍹
